-

Michael Moore would be more effective if he could just resist the urge to be a total cunt. About 2/3rds of his movies are powerful and moving, but are totally ruined by him being a total cunt in the other 1/3rd.
-
Caio — September 25, 2008 @ 1:38 pm
I hate Michael Moore. I think he’s a typical modern American and the criticism that he lives it up and rakes in dollars while whining about the poor is perfectly valid.
But leave General Patton out of this.
Do you know who wrote all those international laws that made the French say you couldn’t invade Iraq? General Patton, General Eisenhower, and a bunch of other American military men, many of whom - like Eisenhower - would go on to be prominent republicans.
For all that bitching about France and the UN, it was your Republican International Laws your were breaking by going into Iraq.
Patton must be spinning in his fucking grave. He would see you people as no different from the Japanese he fought.
-
Caio — September 25, 2008 @ 1:41 pm
Who, was it, by the by, who oversaw the Tribunal in Tokyo that defined the very concept of ‘aggression’ that America threw out? MacArthur. Those laws were created from preventing Japanese fascism/one party democracy from every happening again.
The Republicans now are nothing like the Republicans who saved the world in WWII. They would be disgusted with what you’ve become.
-

I think this a way bigger issue in the Senate.
But anyway one the many reasons to reform the election system, those wascally wedistricters.
-
deutschlandia — September 22, 2008 @ 7:03 pm
This is a reason to increase the size of the House. It’s been stuck at 435 since about the 1920’s (I think, not totally sure). Why 435? Because that is how many that can fit into the Capitol Building, and they don’t want to change the damn thing.
I like the Capitol Building. It’s very pretty. But I like functional democracy a lot more.
-
the3g_ipwn — September 22, 2008 @ 7:28 pm
Why change the building. Just kill off some of the people in the over crowded districts. Start with the Democrats though please.
-
jadechimera — September 22, 2008 @ 7:38 pm
So a bunch of people moved from Wyoming to Montana between 2000 and 2004. It’ll get revised in another couple years anyway.
-
the3g_ipwn — September 22, 2008 @ 7:41 pm
And how many of those Montana/Wyoming stats have been written of as “Bigfoot” sightings?
-
Caio — September 22, 2008 @ 8:09 pm
My god people are retarded.
This is about redistricting. Currently state legislatures choose the districts for house seats every ten (if I remember) years. Imagine you were in a city with 90 republicans and 60 democrats.
Well, a Democratic state legislature could look up (via polls) where the republicans live and divide the districts like this:
District 1: 20 Republicans, 30 Democrats
District 2: 20 Republicans, 30 Democrats
District 3: 50 RepubicansSee, now the Dems win in two districts and the Republicans win in 1, even though the republicans are in the Majority.
Obviously the numbers would be bigger, and it wouldn’t be that simple but you get the point: State Governments can game the system to effect the outcome of the election.
This has been going on for years and years, but since both Democrats and Republicans do this, no one wants to change because they both benefit from it in certain areas.
It also leads to lopsided electoral districts as the chart displays.
-
reboot — September 22, 2008 @ 8:19 pm
@Caio
You’re describing gerrymandering, which is a problem, but not what this chart is about. This chart is simply (Total population of state)/(# of House representatives), normalized to the mean. Nothing about how districts are drawn. Its a quirk of how the numbers are rounded to fit a legislature of 435.
-
Caio — September 22, 2008 @ 9:26 pm
Yeah but but who rounds off those numbers?
I swear to god dude I saw this image on a site about gerrymandering. Like on stumbleupon or something.
-
deutschlandia — September 22, 2008 @ 9:40 pm
@caio
I’m pretty sure the Census works out how many representatives each state gets. I don’t know how their formula works, but it’s probably based around getting each state as close to the average as possible. That’s why the states that deviate from the average on that chart are almost all single-district states: Montana can either be one over-average district, or two under-average districts. The redistricting is done every ten years, because that’s how often the Census is taken, and so how often the states are told how many districts they’ll have.
-
fahzworth — September 23, 2008 @ 1:33 am
yea gerrymandering used to be a big problem. I can’t remember how long ago, but i think it was in the early 1900’s. Either way it’s illegal now and like deutschlandia said the census determines the districts in each state so that there isn’t unfair representation.
-
deutschlandia — September 23, 2008 @ 4:22 pm
Umm, no. Gerrymandering is still a big problem. Gerrymandering based *solely* on race is illegal under the 1965 Voting Rights Act, but doing it for political reasons is still legal.
And the Census doesn’t determine the districts, just how many districts each state gets. The states themselves set their own districts. This is done every ten years (because that’s when the state knows if it’s gaining or losing seats), unless you’re in Texas, when it’s done how ever often Tom DeLay wants.
This chart is only tangentially related to gerrymandering.

There currently is a lawsuit againt Obama. Google it. He may not even legally be able to be President in which case, none of this will matter. However, if you did your research, it should concern you that he has a VERY Marxist background. Hawaii, Ill., Calif. Check it out.
-
jadechimera — September 22, 2008 @ 4:07 pm
Hey StormySeas-
Try googling McCain and “not eligible to be president.” Notice how it all says the same thing.
And if by Marxist, you mean he’s bought into the predominant viewpoint at the University of Chicago’s economics department (Milton Friedman, et al.), then yes, he is a Marxist… who believes in free trade…
If this is all that people can come up with against Obama after over a year of this presidential race, then that’s just pathetic.

-
StormySeas — September 22, 2008 @ 7:51 pm
Get over yourselves for heavens sake. Even if the guy who brought the suit has filed before, all I was saying is that there is a chance of the court finding that Obama is not legally entitled to run for President. I don’t rely on newspapers only. Stop assuming.

True story: About 4 hours ago, I saw a girl wearing a shirt with Obama and the infamous “Change” logo on it.
Being the inquisitive sort that I am, I approached her, and the conversation went about like this….
“So, what does change mean?”
“Chaaaange?” *confused*
“Yeah, ‘change’, like on your shirt.”
“Um, I don’t know.”
“I was just wondering what ‘change’ meant.”
“Well, he’d be the first black president.”
“So…. you’re going to vote for someone based entirely on their race?”
“That’s not what I said!”
“Yes it is. That’s exactly what you said.”
“That’s not what I said!”
“Yes it is, you just said you were basing your decision for president solely because he’s black. Those were your exact words.”
“I can’t EVEN fucking talk to you people.”
“So, who’s ‘you people’?”
“I’m outta here.” *she gets up and leaves*
“???”
-
Finn — September 22, 2008 @ 9:59 pm
@AbNo
You asked for a definition of change, and she gave an example of a change that an Obama presidency would result in. It was a stupid shallow example (skin color is only skin deep after all), but technically true. You didn’t ask her why she supports Obama. Then you starting putting words in her mouth saying that she’s making her decision based soley on race.
“You people” = asshats.
-
AbNo — September 22, 2008 @ 10:10 pm
“What does change mean?”
“A black president”
“So, you’re voting based on race?”I mean, is that, or is that not the short version of that conversation?
Considering I was directly referencing her Obama shirt, I figured the “why” was implied.
But, if you think I gave her too much credit, that’s fine. I can accept that.
-
the3g_ipwn — September 22, 2008 @ 10:30 pm
It was unfair baiting of a weaker mind. Therefore WIN
-
AbNo — September 22, 2008 @ 10:35 pm
Actually, I wasn’t *planning* on baiting her.
Now, that doesn’t mean I wasn’t EXPECTING her to be a racist, but I’ve been looking for an honest, in-person answer to what “change” means.
It was still amusing.

-
SmellySmurf — September 22, 2008 @ 11:00 pm
Change means one step closer to socialism. This picture doesn’t make sense at all. Obama is closer to pushing communism than terrorism though the extremes of each are close. I have always observed liberals to have their hearts in the right place, they want life to be better for everyone. Personally, I only want whats best for myself.
-
Finn — September 23, 2008 @ 12:40 am
@AbNo
I dunno man, you said “Those were your exact words,” yet as you report it those weren’t her exact words. Even if she is as stupid as you make her out to be (and I have little doubt that someone that stupid does in fact exist), you’re not a very sympathetic character yourself.
Do still want an honest answer to what “change” means in the context of this election?
-
AbNo — September 23, 2008 @ 2:37 am
Finn, I’ve been up for two and a half days now.
PARDON ME if I don’t remember every syllable everyone says to me.
And yes, I said “Those were your exact words” at the time.
Perhaps you missed the part where I’d said “and the conversation went about like this…”, meaning I don’t remember everything, other than a couple of amusing portions of it.
Namely because I’ve used that exact same set of lines before. About 12 times. With the exact same results.
And people wonder why I mention Kool-Aid when talking about some of his supporters….
-
Finn — September 23, 2008 @ 9:03 am
Oh, okay. Sorry bout that.
Do you want some non-kool-aid answers? I can tell you why I’m supporting him.
-
AbNo — September 23, 2008 @ 11:49 pm
Sure, let’s hear it. This should be interesting.
-
Finn — September 24, 2008 @ 10:45 pm
First off, I am truly worried about global warming. I’ve got a bachelors in biochemistry and one of the classes I took was a environmental chemistry course. It was the most disheartening class ever because it forced us to look the science and we couldn’t look away since the test was going to be on this. So when I look at politicians, the first thing I look at is how much they are working towards diversifying our energy sources. Obama has voted for alternative energy more than McCain has. The “Drill, baby drill” slogan chanted at the RNC didn’t help any. The science is solid, a solution must be found, and many Republicans still think its not man made. This has to change, and McCain wont do it.
More than that, I think that an investment in alternative energy and infrastructure could really help the economy. This would create more jobs, jobs that couldn’t be sent overseas, jobs that require some skill and couldn’t be filled with just any migrant worker that skipped over the boarder. This also has to change, I’m not sure who will do this, but bridges in the US shouldn’t fail like 35W did. (I live in St. Paul, this is important to me.)
I believe that the free market can do many things, I think that there does need to be some modest regulation to ensure long term stability. Obama has been for modest regulation, and hasn’t pandered to the big, corrupt, old labor unions the way many Democrats have. McCain has been against all regulation for all of his political career up until last week. The Republicans have been saying that cutting taxes for the rich will help us all since the Great Depression; in the last 7 years with Republicans in the White House, the Capitol and the majority on the Supreme Court we have seen what deregulation and cutting taxes for the rich have lead to. This must change; insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
There are more issues, but these are the things that, to me, are the most important right now. I believe that Obama has better answers to these problems.
-
nyokki — September 24, 2008 @ 11:19 pm

Wow, people that lie to themselves on a regular basis, usually react violently when confronted with the truth.
The Liberal media is based on Half-truths designed to appeal to those suffering from white guilt and dementia.
Ask the average Obama voter to give you three things that he will do for the U.S. and the one and only reply you will hear is CHANGE.
There are no specifics, except the ones that they don’t want you to think about. Like raising taxes to provide cheap shitty impersonal healthcare for lazy people (of all ethnicity) who can’t hold a job. Rush tells it like it is, and you can’t stand it.
But as a business owner I guess that I’m all for corporations and capitalism.

And if you make $250k or more, then yeah, he will raise your taxes. As for the other 99% of us, we’ll be doing quite fine under Obama. Just think about what ten billion fewer dollars wasted every month on Iraq can do to improve our healthcare system, education system, and national infrastructure, all of which have been (and, if McCain is elected, will continue to be) sorely neglected for the better part of a decade.

Her teleprompter went out halfway through her speech, and she still did an amazing job. Obama without a script is pure comedy.
McCain and Obama are both douchebags.
If only Colin Powell’s wife would let him run for office. Make him world Tzar.

the3g_ipwn — September 4, 2008 @ 10:21 pm
@Tiki
I want ME drilling in her ass, or where ever else, for that matter.
And you would hit dat too!

the3g_ipwn — September 4, 2008 @ 10:25 pm
@Nimbo:
If people want a black man and a woman in office,
Powell/Rice now that’s a ticket!Who ever wins the election, I hope they keep Condi on. Condi don’t take no shit! Bad perm and all!
-
gx5000 — September 4, 2008 @ 10:44 pm
Condi is about as bad as it gets….
If you missed her being called a liar to her face by the senate…
-
Nimbo — September 4, 2008 @ 10:47 pm
Condi tied herself quite close to 43’s line after becoming Secretary of State. Too many people have a lot of sand in their vaginas over Bush Jr. Personaly, after the patriot act, I dont care what else he did, he needed to be put down.
A zombie washington/lincoln ticket would loose to powell/whoever. But his wife says no.
Bitch

I know those movies.
And I’ll take “The Mom looks like Sarah Palin FTW!”
-
tiki god — September 4, 2008 @ 11:38 pm
@nimbo
that’s the first i’ve heard about that. I’m nearly 100% sure that you’re wrong about that though, cause her speech was 100% canned right wing bullshit that was 95% utter bullshit that nearly every media team tore apart after she gave her presentation.
she sucks and was full of shit. How can someone lie outright and expect the American people not to realize?
-
FlyingMantisShrimp — September 4, 2008 @ 11:50 pm
@Tiki
The American people get lied to all the time, and not just by politicians. Most of the time, people are just going to believe what they want to believe. That’s why you see a speech like this an immediately start calling her a lying whore or whatever, whereas somebody else sees it and thinks she did a great job.
-
asdf — September 5, 2008 @ 12:35 am
@flyingmantisshrimp stop lying to tiki

You mean like when Obama talks candidly to small groups of people in open parks as he tours the country? Who’s holding the teleprompter, the squirrels?
-

Paul must die. He has discovered obama’s teleprompter secret.

“Hi! My name’s Sarah. I don’t really know what Mr. McCain wants me to do, but what I DO know is that I hate women having the right to decide what goes on inside their own bodies; I know I want stone-age religious mythology force-fed to kids in schools; I know I think it’s wrong to teach kids about sex so that even more kids will end up like my own darling daughter who’s such a teenage-mother role model for the rest of America’s youth and I know that that ‘global warming’ thing the tree-huggers talk about is just a fantasy caused by having pieces of broken-off ice-shelf cooling down their brains as it floats south to melt.
So…thank God I’m cute! Cos then you’ll spend the election campaign coming up with stuff like ‘VPILF’ and telling yourselves I’m just a harmless soccer mum at heart; until one day you wake up with me in office. And then you can kiss your rights, your environment and your fucking asses goodbye.”

Paul, I talk candidly to small groups of people in parks without a teleprompter, can you write me in on your ballot?

Paul, I expose myself frequently to small groups of people in parks without a teleprompter or underwear. Can you write me in on your ballot?

storminator — September 5, 2008 @ 9:28 pm
i lived in Anchorage, AK for 20 years. Wasilla, where she was mayor, was a po-dunk place and a 50+ mile commute to Anchorage. she got $27 MILLION for WASILLA? She is an ass kicker. that’s amazing. and when they say she supported the “bridge to nowhere’ - that bridge went to Wasilla- and cut 30+ miles off of the commute. we ALWAYS wanted a bridge there…
-
tiki god — September 10, 2008 @ 7:43 pm
@storminator
YES. EXACTLY.
so why is she running on a “no pork” and “no good old boys” platform? If she’s able to get those projects, which are defined as “pork barrel” projects, why is she running like she’s against that kind of shit?
Also: that bridge was never made, so I think you’re full of shit

-
AbNo — September 10, 2008 @ 10:37 pm
Well, Obama and Biden both voted for the bridge, so at least they provided their support for it, Storm.

I don’t really care that much that Obama won but I work around a lot of blacks who are fucking jumping around like monkeys you would see at the zoo. It really makes me wonder how they complain about getting stereotyped. Not to mention I’ll have to deal with “OOOOOO OBAMA WON OOOOOO MCCAIN LOST WHAT NOW!?!?!?!” all day, which pisses me off.
outofocus — November 5, 2008 @ 7:51 am
@Exacerbate: As if it would be any different if McCain won.
Caio — November 5, 2008 @ 8:01 am
You’ve had your eight years, exacerbate. You wanna talk about stereotypes: George W.hitey Bush.
Snarky Parker — November 5, 2008 @ 8:48 am

@Exacerbate: It’s exactly what you’d be doing if McCain won, so shut the fuck up loser!
goforbroke — November 5, 2008 @ 3:23 pm

Dr.Devine — November 5, 2008 @ 3:27 pm
I’m with goforbroke, I think everyone should start stockpiling arms or move out of the US, just in case shit goes down hill… If he solves it all, fucking beautiful.
If not, I’ll be damned if I’m going to be killed in the ensuing anarchy/ Chinese Invasion.
Sawn-off shotgun for the win.
