Allegiant The Divergent Series: Allegiant review Movies movie reviews

Beyond the wall, Tris and Four face a threat more dangerous than they ever imagined, fighting for the future of an entire city in this action-packed third Divergent adventure.

Special effects were nice, I could have used a “previously on…” opening though, this series has gotten silly with it’s storyline.

Watchable but not suggestible.

A woman of a certain age finds her world turned upside down by a handsome new co-worker in a witty and compassionate late-life coming-of-age-story.

Sally Field and Max Greenfield, that’s all you really need to know. It’s a great film with heart and man I enjoyed every minutes of it.

In the near future a group of soldiers are sent to test a new autonomous weapons platform. Things go sideways, and quickly. This film has been on my radar for a while, and it it amazingly well done. The specifics are insanely well done with a story that’s simple but well thought out.

Highly recommend if you’re into near future military stuff, I am and I loved Kill Command.

This is the remake of a better film.  It was pretty, story was exactly like the first film, acting was about what you would expect and the visuals were absolutely stunning.  Just ignore the unfortunate CGI that shows up occasionally and you may enjoy yourself slightly more.

400 days 724x1024 400 Days review Movies movie reviews

Moon meets The Divide in this high concept, sci-fi thriller with an ensemble cast. –Amazon

I recognized literally every actor and actress in this. I loved them all in other films and television shows that I’ve seen them in and I enjoyed them in this film.  It’s one of those films that only has 2 or three sets, but boy howdy do they use them to great effect.  It’s difficult to speak about the plot without giving away too much, but here’s my attempt: Several astronauts and scientists are taking part in a 400 day test in which they’re locked inside a fake spaceship underground for 400 days.

Then something goes bump in the night.  Is it something to be concerned about?  Or just a sound from the world outside?

darkcontinent 797x1024 Monsters: Dark Continent review Movies movie reviews

An American platoon stationed in the Middle East is thrust into battle with a new breed of Aliens in this epic sequel to Gareth Edwards’ (GODZILLA) cult sci-fi hit, MONSTERS. –Amazon.com

The first “Monsters” movie was an allegory for Immigrants and drug runners coming to America. This one is an allegory Americans creating bigger monsters in the middle east and the surrounding populations. The special effects were insanely well done, and I would suggest watching it just for them alone, but the story and acting was on the same level. There’s some rough patches in there, but it’s an enjoyable film.

71XbyOb73cL. SL1500 683x1024 Ghostbusters (2016) review Movies movie reviews

From director Paul Feig, GHOSTBUSTERS makes its long-awaited return starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon & Leslie Jones. –Amazon.com

There’s an elephant in the room with a a particular SJW/sexism/politically correct insanity twist, so let’s get that out of the way: This film is not one of those silly over the top “oh I can do it because I’m a girl” type movies. Their genders don’t matter, which is amazing considering how the film was marketed. The initial marketing was completely out of line with what the film ended up being. Actually, I take that back, the blurb above it from today’s version of the Amazon listing of the film, and it’s still completely wrong. The Ghostbusters do not return, there is no triumphant “hey we’ve been gone for 20 years, how’s it going” story line, in this film, they completely reboot the series and ignore the previous two movies. Not in a smart way like Star Trek (the old stuff is still there, just in an alternate dimension) or Star Wars (it’s all still there, but here’s a new story that looks exactly like our first story), but in a silly way that asks the audience to disregard years of hope and fandom. They had the opportunity to pull the same BS that Ghostbuster II did, where everyone just stopped believing in ghosts and these four new ghostbusters are the only ones that still believe, or independently find out about the ghosts among us. Oh well, opportunity missed.

Luckily, that’s the worst thing I can say about the movie. Humor and story are on par with Ghostbusters II, and the acting and special effects are about what you would expect from a summer blockbuster movie that deals with ghosts. That is to say, it’s all watchable once or twice but isn’t going to stand up to repeated viewings. Surprisingly though, I think I’d rather re-watch Ghostbusters (2016) than re-watch Independence Day: Resurgence. Additionally, the cameos were pretty weak, Billy Murrey’s being the worst and Ernie Hudson’s being the best. Dan Akroid’s was somewhere in the middle with just a touch of fourth wall breaking that I wasn’t exactly thrilled with.

At the end of the day, I suggest you check it out in theaters, they’ve set up a good universe with room to grow, and it was a good movie as long as you ignore the fact that there were previous movies. My favorite parts all included Slimer, not sure what that says about me or the movie.

Cockroaches get re-engineered to save humanity, but will our meddling be the end of us all?

Why in god’s name did I watch all of these. The first one started the franchise out on the right foot, there’s a pseudo futurism element to it, the second one pretty much forgets they’re in the future and the third one just throws everything to the wind and just gives up on the future idea, or even the idea of going somewhere other than a single apartment.

Complete rubbish that’s pretty enjoyable if you’re into shlocky horror that has pretensions of science fiction.

The Stargate SG-1 team travels to the ruins of Dakara to find the fabled Ark of Truth. Built by the Alterans, (builders of the Stargates) millions of years before, this ancient artifact may be the sole means remaining to defeat the Ori armies.

After my recent time travel movie experience with the SG-1 team, I chose my next SG-1 adventure somewhat more carefully. I had fully forgotten about the Ori though, and that their queen bee was no one else but Morena Baccarin. It was a pleasant trip down memory lane.

51I1KjNS1L Stargate: Continuum review Movies movie reviews

An elite military unit (SG-1) must flee back to Earth when two members of their team inexplicably disappear into thin air. But they return to a world in which the Stargate – an Ancient device which allows them to travel to hundreds of planets – was never discovered, and their own history has been erased. Now they must convince a dubious government and military that the timeline was altered by a powerful Alien enemy (Ba’al) in order to conquer Earth, and time is not on their side…

I got a hankerin for some Stargate : SG1 over the weekend, so I brought this out out of containment, didn’t even bother to read the back of the box. I regret doing that, because as I DO like the cast of SG-1 (yes, even the second team), I strongly dislike pretty much every time travel story that I’ve run into over the last 15 years.

This one was no different, and it was obvious that much of the time travel stuff was done so they could save on set budgets. Somewhat enjoyable, but bleh to the time travel.
