Baseball Furies

(5 votes, average: 4.2 out of 5)I watched this movie last weekend for the first time in a long time… like 15 yrs, probably. The Baseball Furies were always my favorite gang. I mean, c’mon, in reality that would have beat the shit out of the Warriors. They were just too bad ass.

An amazing film. Should be shown to every high school student as part of an anti-drug program (hard drugs anyway). They’ll never touch the stuff.

idk if some of the parts of this movie would be acceptable for a high school curriculum (i.e. the Ass-to-Ass part) but I would agree with you that it would scare the shit out of some people and make them never want to try hard drugs. I pretty much refuse to watch this movie again because of how fucked up it is.

This movie was about addiction, infact i’m using the term movie rather lightly, it’s pumped with propaganda, loaded with inductive logic.
YOU TAKE DRUG = PENIS TURNS BLACK, FALLS OFF AND YOU TURN INTO MEXICAN

I don’t know, something might be wrong with me, but this movie didn’t shock me. I wouldn’t do hard drugs anyway, but even if I wanted to, this movie wouldn’t shock me to the point where I don’t wanna do it.
-

eh, the whole ‘necrotic arm that had to be removed’ bit and the ‘ass 2 ass’ bit was something that would turn me off.
also, going insane. yeah, that’s a bad thing too.
-
dieAntagonista — December 1, 2008 @ 4:37 pm
Well it certainly didn’t turn me on. But it was far from typical or realistic. If you want to see a realistic movie about drug addicts, then watch “We Children From Bahnhof Zoo”. It’s based on a real story about a 14 year old girl from Berlin who got addicted to drugs and almost died because of it. It’s a German movie.
And going insane is a privilege my friend.

Thats the one Bowie was involved with.

On IMDB the title is “Christiane F. - Wir Kinder Vom Bahnhof Zoo”, yes.
Indeed, Bowie is in it as well. Pretty spectacular.

Oh no. Is this a remake? I loved the original.. why can’t they leave it alone.
And I see zombie in the tags, if it has zombies, I won’t complain. Keanu Reeves is good too, but I can’t imagine how this could be good.
-
RSIxidor — November 25, 2008 @ 10:34 am
I saw the preview. It doesn’t actually look that bad. I was pleasantly surprised.
-
CathyLong — November 25, 2008 @ 10:58 am
@RSIxidor:
this. It looks ‘not bad’ as in d/l and possible DVD ownage worthy but not theatre worthy.
-
Paul_Is_Drunk — November 25, 2008 @ 11:14 am
I think most remakes miss the ideas that made the original great, instead focusing on the plot and modernizing it. No desire to see this.
Seriously, can anyone name one remake that is better or even worthy of the original? Someone once said Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I’ll take an acid boat ride over Johny Depp any day.
-

I ran across a trailer for a new Star Trek movie. Impressive.
-
dieAntagonista — November 25, 2008 @ 11:34 am
@Paul_Is_Drunk: I agree.
But there are some good remakes. Like Night of the Living Dead. It’s definitely worthy of Romero’s original. I wouldn’t say better, but the different twist at the end makes it brilliant.
-

Keanu Reeves should have quit acting after Bill and Ted.
-
SumoSnipe — November 25, 2008 @ 11:57 am
Is Keanu playing the robot? Seems a perfect role for him.
Do restarts count as remakes? We are on what, Punisher take 3?
I wasn’t too impressed with Night of the Living Dead, but did think that the next remake Dawn was worthy

But the new Punisher has super sexy Titus Pullo from Rome in it!! I’ll probably get arrested for public indecency for masturbating in the theater!
…time to get out my Rome DVD set again
-
dieAntagonista — November 25, 2008 @ 12:45 pm
@SumoSnipe: You mean Dawn of the Dead the remake or the original? I love the Dawn of the Dead 2004 version, but it’s not as meaningful as the original. Only the ending is much better. And of course the zombies are way more awesome. I never wanted to be trapped in a mall more than after seeing that movie.

The remake that I dislike most is Miracle on 34th Street. The original was funny, smart and creative. The remake was all about unadulterated faith and missed the whole point. The original is for all ages, the remake is for the under 7 crowd exclusively.

If NYC gets leveled, I’ll watch it that far, otherwise I can’t be bothered.
This is why I only watched the first half of both ID4 and Armageddon…
Once the city got boinked I lost interest.
-
sylvanish — November 25, 2008 @ 6:45 pm
@RSIxidor: Okay guy… Tom Jane made the Punisher look like a wimp. They took a hardcore character and made him politically correct in the lamest way with that flick. I was far more turned on by the generic weapons he had in that movie. It had a couple good scenes and nothing else. Granted Tom Jane is hell of sexy in his own right, but Titus Pullo (I really don’t want to IMDB him) is thrice as sexy, so even if the movie sucks just as bad, it will still be three times as goood.

warp nacelles are too close to the saucer section, the warp field is going to be disrupted by their proximity and it’ll never be able to go over light speed.
which sucks, cause it’ll take them the entire movie just to get to the end of our solar system.

-

So what is the radius that warp nacelles need to function properly? 10m? 20?
-
garbledxmission — November 13, 2008 @ 10:26 am
JJ Abrams is the current king of fucking over his fans. (he took the crown from David Lynch) While from what I have seen preview wise of this movie gives me hope that maybe, just maybe this once he might not treat the viewers like something other than with his usual utter contempt I’m not going to hold my breath.
Lost is the ultimate inside joke where the joke is on the viewer. And JJ and his cronies are laughing at them all the way to the bank.Not that I have strong feelings on the subject or anything.
-
aarpie — November 13, 2008 @ 10:49 am
@garbledxmission:
For the record, the fact that Lost is sucking ass at this point is ABC’s fault. JJ wanted to do three seasons, then end the series with a movie. ABC gave him the old “fuck no, you make us money!” response, so he told them right then and there he was going to destroy the series. I think we can all agree that season four is pretty much where Lost reached the “WTF” zone. And I’m not getting that off of forum fodder, a friend of mine worked for ABC at the time and was privvy to the coversation. Good times.@tiki god
Actually, the closer they are to the saucer section, and the more streamlined the ships shape is, the better the warp field will be. Which means, this design is even more kick assier… yes, I am that big of a nerd…
-
MikeBabaguh — November 13, 2008 @ 12:24 pm
Are you kidding? Season 4 was lightyears better than seasons 2 and 3.
-
garbledxmission — November 13, 2008 @ 12:55 pm
@aarpie. No, you are wrong and here is why. I’ll even do it point by point for you.
1) You stated that JJ wanted to end at three seasons and do a movie but ABC said “no we want more money, do more seasons”. Ok, think about that. He wanted to stop making a TV series which makes decent money and move to a movie format which would make shitloads of money. How exactly is that less greedy than what ABC wanted?
2) When ABC told him to make more seasons he told them he was going to destroy the series. So he’d rather ruin a series beloved by millions and (once again), fuck over his fans because he was having the producer version of a temper tantrum because he wasn’t getting his way. BTW, if he had a contract with ABC for more seasons as part of the TV deal, then how is it right that he reneges on said deal so he could make a movie so he could gain more fame/attention/money?
3) His entire producing/directing/writing style is lazy and sloppy at best. He purposefully makes things overly mysterious, weird, dramatic and gives as little information out as possible while raising 5 questions for every answer he deigns to provide. It’s a style of writing that preys upon the human need to know things, especially that which is purposefully kept hidden from them. (you know, like a kid wanting to know what’s in his Xmas presents) It’s all action/reaction on the part of the characters, (who are all pretty one damn dimensional btw), and no real development of a real story. This way he doesn’t really need a real storyline, plot, story logic, real character development, dialogue, etc. He can just dribble tidbits of info out from time to time, keeping the fans wanting more like a bunch of junkies. David Lynch did this for years, which makes JJ derivative and unimaginative. He couldn’t even come up with an original way to fuck people over, he had to copy someone else’s style of doing it. The entire feel of “Cloverfield” screamed that aforementioned style.
4) JJ Abrams has on many occasions openly expressed his loathing and contempt for his fans, likening them to “rubes” or “suckers”. He treats his entire career like a gigantic inside joke played on the masses who are stupid enough to come back for more of his bullshittery. How do you feel knowing the person that created this show you like so much thinks of it as a meal ticket and has no respect for you, the person that paid for said meal? So little respect that he’d rather destroy the show than not get his way like some kind of child. This is the man you are so vociferously defending.Like I said, I am a ST fan so I will give the new movie a shot. Since it’s a very different type of story his normal style of directing may not be applicable to it. We will have to wait and see. I hope, I really, really hope he doesn’t fuck it up. But I’m not betting against it.
-
MrPsychic — November 13, 2008 @ 5:23 pm
@tiki god: The nacelles could be angled back, like the refit Enterprise from TMP. Personally, I think the secondary hull is too short, it needs to be a bit longer to sort of balance it out. No other starship designs end right where the nacelles connect to the hull.
-
Phyreblade — November 13, 2008 @ 11:54 pm
Srsly, if you are going to make a film based on one of the most popular and widely canonized sci-fi franchises ever, you’d think they’d do at least a *little* warp drive engineering research first before designing the spacecraft…

Have to say, I’m really not excited for this movie. I’m not trolling here, but after falling in love with the book… the trailer just seems like a fanboy’s misinterpretation of the tone that Alan Moore established. It’s like Snyder’s trying to make the Watchmen cool, when really they are supposed to feel more like real people. Again, im not trying to piss people off… just worried that Snyder is making mistakes (changing costumes, changing the end of the movie, removing The Black Freighter, etc…)
-
Ben1605 — October 22, 2008 @ 5:11 pm
I have no idea what Watchmen is/are.
But I’m sure the next few comments will be full of people who do know telling me, while flaming me for my lack of knowledge about American comics originating from before I was born.
-
JazzyJazzyJazzHands — October 22, 2008 @ 5:12 pm
I’m not either. I like the comic, hell I enjoyed it a lot, but I dunno, I don’t think it can made into good movie now. I think if it was done in the 80s and early 90s when things were made to be gritty, hell it could have been good, but not now.
-
JazzyJazzyJazzHands — October 22, 2008 @ 5:18 pm
@Ben1605
It’s a gritty noir-ish visual novel based on the what-if factor, if super heroes really existed in our time, what things would be like, taking place during the Cold War and on the verge of a nuclear war.
Almost every character is a realistic version of a famous superhero, and even more fucked up than the superhero they’re based on.
-
Camiam321 — October 22, 2008 @ 5:27 pm
@Ben1605: hahaha true
-
Camiam321 — October 22, 2008 @ 5:30 pm
Yeah Jazzy’s got it right. Based on his description, Snyder seems to be trying to do his versions of current superheroes… Night Owl looks a little too much like a bad take on Nolan’s Batman, Silk Spectre looks a lot like Electra to me… the only character who looks a lot like he did in the graphic novel is Rorschach.
-
Paul_Is_Drunk — October 22, 2008 @ 5:31 pm
Ugh, I fell into Ben1605’s stereotype…
@JazzyJazzyJazzHands
The characters can be interpreted as analogs of popular heroes, but they were original based on the Charlton comic book character recently bought by DC. When DC wouldn’t let Alan use the character because they had plans for them, he created very similar characters.Rorschach = The Question
Nite Owl = Blue Beetle
Dr. Manhattan = The Atom
Comedian = Peacermaker
Etc, etc, etc…
-
Camiam321 — October 22, 2008 @ 5:38 pm
Paul has it right pretty much, though I’d also give Alan Moore credit for taking the characters beyond their inspirations. Dr. Manhattan is much more of a living god than The Atom, because people really wouldnt be affraid of The Atom, even if he was the first super powered human to show up.
In many ways, the book is about the implications of the first real superhero showing up in history.
-
outofocus — October 22, 2008 @ 5:48 pm
I just reread the book since it had been more than a decade since the last time I did so. I’m not sure how I feel about the movie. There are tons of movies that have come out and/or are being made that are just ripping off great stories. Instead of the industry putting the effort into realizing these stories in ways that inspire as the books did… they just americanize it (ie: dumb down the ideas while glossing the visuals). It pisses me off that all the technology we have is often put to waste… for all the wrong reasons.
*ranty*
-
elzarcothepale — October 22, 2008 @ 10:16 pm
all valid points- but the only thing that I think is truly important to people who loved the novel is that when they watch it, it makes them feel the same way.
No offense to those who get bent out of shape over the loss in translation, but c’mon- you have to realize (and i’m sure you already do, in a grudging way) that most of these changes HAVE to be made. They have to be made because you can’t make a movie for purist fans. you have to broaden the scope of the film’s appeal, or it won’t get made at all. You can’t put the Black Freighter in the main body of the film because it’s an editor’s nightmare- trying to flip from one to the other- no virgin audience would be able to follow what the hell was going on, and it’ll choke the censors even at the R rating
*(if it’s done properly, amirite? Correct me if im wrong, but I was under the impression they were filming an animatic and putting on the DVD?)*
These are the handicaps that the film industry has- editing for time, and audience appeal- without them money doesn’t get made, and without the promise of a return on investment, no studio would make it.
Some of us fans would even go so far as to say: “fine! good! whatever- i’d rather it didn’t happen than have it not be the way it should be”
But I, personally, think that this would be a tragedy- think how many new readers this movie will pull in for the original novel- I’d rather have a movie that missed the mark, buy it on DVD, look at whatever cool shit comes on the Features and then re-read the book- knowing that the odds of a random person being able to talk to me about this fantastic piece of literature have just jumped- AND if they haven’t read it yet, they’ll be much more inclined. I sure as hell had no need to read “I Am Legend” until I saw the movie.tl;dr: movies have to make compromises in order to get made- and i’d rather we see it come close and miss than just say fuck it.
