   The truth is that the movie is pretty good. At least it’s a nice departure from all the comic-book-based garbage that has been hurled at us this year.

   It’s predictable as hell, of course, if only because everyone should know how it ends. And James Franco is about as believable as a scientist as Tara Reid was in Alone in the Dark. But Cesar (the main chimp) is goddamn amazing. Again, everything about him is predictable, but the execution is stunning. He’s the most lively, interesting, and emotive (without being emo) character in a long time.

   Certainly worth the download…

   Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who was seriously awesome on so many levels. The new Doctor Who series has been the best written sci-fi on television, hands down. Everything from plot twists that actually make sense to jokes about why Nixon was so paranoid.

     I sometimes forget that there’s a ton of people on mcs that don’t know english all that well. what I meant was: “it was the only science fiction that was currently being produced at the time of airing that was good”. comparing SG:U to ST: TNG is ludicrous. There’s plenty of other space shows being made afaik, this was just the only one that didn’t suck donkey dick.

   A “Stargate alumni”? You must be about 12 years old if Jason Mamoa is a “Stargate alumni” to you. And if it takes *him* to give the show credibility for you, instead of, say, Sean Bean, one of the greatest living actors of all time, it also probably takes all the titty to really sell it otherwise you’d tune out. Jason’s character in this show may have some potential simply because the source material and the adaptation is artful enough to overshadow his soggy acting and douchey demeanor. After all, he said only *one* word in the opener. One syllable, no less. But his Conan the Barbarian will do for the character what Kevin Sorbo did for Kull the Conqueror. At best it’ll be a spiritual sequel 10,000 B.C., not De Laurentiis’ Conan. And expect an equally lame score from Tyler Bates, though you’ll probably like all that prog rock guitar, too.

     I was under the impression that it wasn’t supposed to be a remake of Dino De Laurentiis’ movie. But a mix of that and the the original source material. According to Robert E. Howards description he looks more like Conan than Arnold did.

       Yeah, he’s famous as being a shitty male model-turned-B-series actor with turns in soaps like Baywatch and North Shore before he ever got to Stargate, which was clearly some ploy to toss in a ‘hunk’ element to the show and dumb it down. SG-1 had a hunk, Christopher Judge, only he also had brains, culture, and intricate backstory. SG:A may be Mamoa’s largest volume of work but it’s not his most popular in the mainstream. He was a gimmick on SG:A as much as Jewel Staite was, and that whole spinoff was really just a throw-away ‘yet another epic villain’ sleeper that ran 5 more season than it needed to and lacked all the things that makes SG:U great. His counterpart on SG:U, Jamil Walker Smith (Greer), outshines him in every way without having to resort to petty and stylized brutish manliness, sleaveless shirts, or shitty dreads. Mamoa’s like fucking Chewbacca if you shaved his entire body and casted him in gay porn.
