This was a hard one to get through, for multiple reasons.  I started it back in August of 2014, which was right around when my mother was getting sick, so while I was looking for distractions, I wasn’t finding the right kind of pull from PROTOTYPE that I needed at the time.  The story is a confusing mess that relies on you collecting bits of it from the memories of passing by civilians or soldiers, but ultimate the story was actually pretty light, mostly consisting of someone doing evil things just because they could.

The battles were another thing that were somewhat frustrating as well, as I found myself frequently having to play the game in a way that completely took me out of the game itself.  The prime example of this was the final battle where I had to get the boss caught up in the environment in order to properly heal myself and fight back.

It was enjoyable, but it took me far longer than the 11 hours that’s mentioned on how long it takes me beat, about 27 hours of game time and about 10 months of calendar time.

Considering the trailers and marketing portrayed this film as being a not-too-serious take on a zombie uprising, I feel they delivered in spades with corney zombie apocalypse humor and over the top cgi action.  That being said, isn’t the ‘action comedy zombie’ film genre getting a little crowded now?  just once I think I’d like to see one where everything goes as it should and the uprising is managed as something that’s just another bit of nature.  Instead, every film has the characters barely self aware of their zombie situation. I was thinking that The Walking Dead might be that, but it turns out that the only thing worse than zombies are people in that universe.

Back to CvZ though, it was a good romp that didn’t take itself seriously, so good for a rental at least.

Prometheus + Alien = ‘Derelict’ review

‘Derelict’ is an editing project for academic purposes. ‘Prometheus’ wasn’t exactly an Alien prequel, but this treats it as such by intercutting the events of Alien with Prometheus in a dual narrative structure. The goal was to assemble the material to emphasize the strengths of Prometheus as well as its ties to Alien.

‘Derelict’ is also in black & white to better marry the visual quality of the two originals (and also because both films look great in black & white). Roughly 30 minutes has been cut from Prometheus and about an hour of Alien has been used in its place. Some content from the deleted scenes of Prometheus was also used.

The 30 minutes that was cut from the film wasn’t missed at all, I only had a single “wtf are they even thinking” moment with this version of the film.  The original Promethus had several, the ones that I still remember include opening alien jars without any reason, playing with aliens snakes, running the wrong way when a space ship is falling on you… All and all this was a good marriage and both films come out better for the pairing.  That being said, looks like all the streaming versions of the film have been nuked from orbit, but an enterprising person would be able to find them.
