    0 666x1024 Cosmo

NEW ONGOING SERIES! “Space Aces” – Part One: Cosmo is a Martian with the skills of a warrior and a heart of gold. He’s the leader of his M.A.R.S. unit that explores the solar system. What was meant to be a routine scouting mission turns into a much larger adventure Cosmo and his friends stumble upon a panicked human and encounter some ferocious foes!

I’m a huge fan of what Archie Comics are doing with all their properties with modern takes on The Jetsons, Flinstones, Archie, and Scooby-Doo. Cosmo is one of those properties that they’ve had for over 50 years but have only printed a handful of issues with the characters and the preview on the above amazon.com link really sold me on both the story of a bumbling Earthman meeting Cosmo The Martian, who’s on The Moon for some reason or another. It’s not an overly complex series but I’ve really enjoyed the first couple issues that I’ve read.

    91PttzI8sPL. SL1500 841x1024 Critters 1 4

A group of small, furry aliens makes lunch out of the locals in a farming town.

There’s been four movies in the Critters franchise, all of them about and hour and a half long each, the last two leading directly into each other, though the last movie was definitely set in a vastly different location than the first three. Since they were so short, I was able to watch all four of them in an afternoon. From 1986, 1988, 1991, and 1992, all of them featured practical effects over computer generated effects and for all their work to make the Critters look scary, I actually found them to be precosious and even cute at times. Yes, there’s the eating your face thing, but I feel like they’re just tribbles that got out of the wrong side of the bed and are able to grow legs and feet when they eat too much. It’s a type of low budget / low brow franchise that unfortunately I don’t think we see much of any more.

The acting was on par with what I expected from the franchise, the practical effects were obvious at times, but damn if the series didn’t have heart. I’d love to see another entry in the franchise if they were able to capture this feeling on film again without any use of computer generated Critters.

Some notes from each of the movies:

    Critters 1:
Billy Zane (the evil guy from that movie about a boat) and Ethan Phillips (Nelix from Star Trek: Voyager) were here, both of them much younger than I think I’ve seen either actor in roles that ended up not being what I expected from them.

    Critters 2:
How did the critters become a giant ball of Critters? How did they stay that way?
Also, lots of nudity from Roxanne Kernohan, who I’ve just discovered was not actually featured in any men’s magazines.

    Critters 3:
Leonardo Dicaprio, as a very young man with a shitty step father. The step father situation is resolved to my satisfaction though, spoiler: the Critters ate him.

    Critters 4:
    Critters in spaaaaace.
Angela Basset as the take no shit navigator of a space ship. I like her, she’s going places I think.

    91FxHUNVsqL. SL1500 883x1024 Blade Runner 2049

A new blade runner unearths a secret that could plunge what’s left of society into chaos and leads him on a quest to find a former LAPD blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.

I wasn’t expecting this movie to lose so much of it’s emotional impact for me when I watched it at home. Maybe it was because I was watching it on a smaller screen with only 5.1 surround sound vs the Big Screen with it’s 200 speakers of surround Dolby Digital glory, but something was missing, or at least dampened down.  Perhaps it was because I already knew the answers to the mysteries?

The story was still great, the visuals were still amazing.

120992314 660x1024 Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours

Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so, she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.

I’m a fan of David Mack’s work and this story was no exception, it was tightly scripted, the characters all seemed to be the same people I’ve seen on TV and since he worked closely with the TV series script writers, there’s some elements of the Discovery crew that were revealed in the book well before they were revealed on the show. Of primary interest to me was the bridge crew of the Shenzhou. If you’re just watching the show, you don’t know any of their names or backstory, but there’s plenty given here!

This was an enjoyable story that moved quickly and explored the first time Spock and Burnham met officially, which happens at a surprising period of their lives and definitely not when I thought it would have happened.
