My white x-box recent RROD’d…I’d been thinking about getting a new one for a while, and it’s about four years old, so I’m not shedding any tears over it’s passing, but what could I do with this old x-box? I’m not in a rush to fix it because I’ve already replaced it with the “slim” model, which isn’t too slim, but it’s black, so I guess black is slimming?

Anyways, have any of you guys had an experience with fixing red rings?

    sell it on ebay….for $3858.72, say it’s a limited series 2008 x-box model

I got mine to work for a couple of months by reflowing the solder with a heat gun, but then it broke again. I’m thinking I’ll see about just buying a working motherboard.

well I found a couple instructions on the internet, and they’re never wrong, so i think I’m going to try to take it apart and redo the thermal paste and …stuff? I dunno, I’m not even really sure what the exact problem is with it. Yes, it has the typical three rings, and everyone says that’s due to the motherboard warping due to the x-clamp on the heat sink, but mine died when the power went out at my house, so I’m halfway thinking that it’s a power issue of some sort…

Could be a surge of some kind broke the weakened solder, or something. Just replacing the thermal paste won’t work, I’m pretty sure, most of the guides that walk you through that will tell you to do the towel trick, which is just reflowing the solder in a less controlled and more stupid way.

well the ones that I found said to change out the heat sinks for both the processor and the graphics card and to change out the thermal paste too. lots of fun bullshit.

The problem I have with that is how is the firmware sup[posed to recognise that the heatsink isn’t working properly each time? If that were the case I’d expect it to work fine for a few minutes every time you started it cold and THEN break, not just consistently be broken every time you turn it on.

Then again, I’m not an Xbox technician.

Whisper into it’s ear all the things you are going to do to it. Then take a hammer and smash the shit out of it whilst saying “you whore!” at the top of your voice. Probably finish with defecating on the remains as a closer. Not essential but it would be a nice touch.

same here, and I agree with your point.

I however am an xbox technician and I say you need to hammer it until it works
