1980’s Flash Gordon with Sam Jones is a monstrously good movie if you like cheese factor. I was totally obsessed with the movie as a kid.

The new SciFi channel series of the same name, which I hope has been cancelled, was unwatchable.

The original book, by Richard Matheson, is about a scientist who becomes legendary among the new vampire-like sort-of-but-not zombie people who end up taking over the Earth. The point is that as he struggles to combat these “monsters,” it is HE who becomes the monster in the minds of this new population of the planet. Thus he becomes this tragic and ironic figure. It’s an excellent book, and the black and white Vincent Price movie is an excellent adaptation of it. Heston’s reincarnation of the role in Omega Man is also very good, and puts a new spin on the book and the Price movie without losing the spirit of it. (Heston also runs around with a submachinegun with a giant flashlight mounted on it, way before gun-mounted tactical lights were cool among the popular kids.)

This was the best film rendition of the book (aside from the horrible makeup) but Heston was not the 1st to play the roll. Vincent Price had done a film version of the book years earlier called The Last Man on Earth (still better than Will Smith’s portrayal).

I most definitely agree with you. Richard Matheson’s book does a much better job of presenting the sheer loneliness of being the last true human alive. It’s an incredible book. None of the movie versions have even come close.

In an effort to be fair, I felt her character served an important role in the first two seasons, as a decent secondary character. She started bugging me in S03, and by 4, he death brought about a cheer. Maybe its because my own mother would never act as she did that I found her irritating in the worst way. Oh wait, Mother’s day passed already?

I found they didn’t do quite as good of a job with her death as I thought they could.. They should’ve done more build-up to it. It was like suddenly she’s feeling depressed and on drugs and bang, she’s dead. Too fast for my taste, especially after all the character dev.

I liked her character, though I felt that killing her off made for a great episode twist. However, this season is getting too much into the Baltar “one god” storyline and the Kara Thrace “I know how to find earth” plot. The series is losing steam. If BSG has a jump the shark moment, it will be the killing of Cally.

Anyway, I think the final Cylon is Gaeta: we know nothing about his background, he’s always around people in power (Adama, Baltar, now Starbuck). Plus other reasons.

My point is, I liked Cally…she’s wholesomely sexy.

The animated series was pretty damn good, to be honest it shat over episodes 1-3. That is purely due to the reduced involvement of George Lucas, whichis the same here, so hopefully it will carry the same wit and style as the clone wars series.

Also a live action series is being made with totally new characters from the universe.

Episode IV was made first cuz Lucas only had a vague idea what was going to happen in I-III, actually.

And don’t forget how awesome the Clone Wars 2-DVD movie was… proof that if Lucas keeps his meaty hands out of it, some good stuff can come out of his universe.
