     Two Dollar bills are not uncommon around where I live, has one of the businesses (a grocery store), routinely gives them in change. My bank usually has about $100 worth in the petty cash drawer (I ask for them when I cash my check).

     Go 40 minutes away and people think they should collect them. Go outside of Central Penna and people think they are fake. Idiots.

   So, what this scene is really saying is that the X-Men’s Blackbird has the structural integrity and thruster capacity to lift a fucking sub out of the ocean. Suspension of disbelief, kids. I can accept that Magneto can levitate a metal submarine but just like Superman lifting a tanker over his head while standing on wet mud without sinking up to his neck, there’s some very basic physics exterior to the characters that needs to be acknowledged.

     That may be true for Superman, but with Magneto’s powers, I don’t think you can assume that he is the center of force. Instead of thinking of the submarine being lifted out of the water, Magneto could be manipulating the Earth’s magnetic field in such a way to push the submarine up towards him. So no force needs to be applied to either Magneto or the jet.
     Or some bullshit like that.

   I like the trailer but there’s no way a good script could have survived a gang rape like that without tearing something.

Last weekend saw the launch of Google’s privacy-busting Street View in Norway, and it didn’t take long for locals to spot a traditional Viking welcome for the Great Satan of Mountain View’s spymobile on the streets of Bergen:

This entertaining spectacle has prompted Norwegian paper Aftenposten to not unreasonably ask “Who’s chasing Google with fish spears?”

     Rob’s keeping it hush-hush as he wants to let the Toronto International Film Festival have the first looks at it. He feels like he owes it to them for making Phil the Alien a hit.

     I only found out about because Rue Morgue Mag leaked a photo of it a few months ago.

   my buddy did all the storyboarding for this picture. so he’s told me a bunch about it. aparently he got a lot of artistic freedom and many of the sets were designed around his original artwork. I’ll see if I can get some from him to upload, but I have a feeling his contract will forbit him from spreading it around.

    Ironically, in one of Harry Turtledove’s novels, vacuum tubes are what saves humanity’s technology. Aliens invade during WWII and they detonated nukes in the atmosphere to use the EMPs to wipe out our technology. There were no microchips at the time, so in a way, antiquated technology saved the day.

   Asked what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, she said: “They’re our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.”

Photos taken by Andreas Skjervold ; Short display around 23:00, but finally I got to use my new D300 for what is was bought for. ISO 800 and 20sec exposures. Saw a meteor as well and it might have been my imagination but I’m sure it made a sizzling sound.

   i lived in Alaska for 20+ years. i’ve seen The Northern Lights cover from horizon to horizon- with every color in the spectrum. INCREDIBLE. (they’re usually green)

Megalodon vs Great White

The Megalodon is an ancient species of shark about 18 million years old. The photos were taken, by the submitter, at the Buena Vista Museum in Bakersfield California where some of the best Meaglodon teeth have been recovered just a few miles away at “shark tooth hill”.

   Meh, they’re just trying to impress. The “great” white inside the mouth is less than 7 feet long.

   Still pretty impressive, but not as much as they’d have you believe.

Nacreous Clouds

Nacreous or “mother of pearl” clouds are made of microscopic ice crystals floating in the stratosphere 9 to 16 miles high. These clouds gather when the temperature in the polar stratosphere drops below -85 C. Because of that numbing threshold, they tend to appear only during winter over cold places such as Scandinavia, Alaska and Iceland.

Nacreous clouds are supposed to be rare, yet sky watchers in Scandinavia has spotted them frequently during the past two weeks. Could this be a “nacreous storm”? A similar, mysterious abundance of nacreous clouds occurred in January 2008; it could be happening again. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for mother of pearl during the twilight hours after sunset or before sunrise.
