Avro Vucan/B 52

The Vulcan first was deployed by the RAF in 1956 while the B 52 went to SAC units a year earlier.The Vulcan being withdrawn from service right after the Falkland War.But the B 52 may be in service up until the 2030`s or later!

   Now if they can only get the aircraft to stop trying to asphyxiate it’s pilot… Seriously though I suspect the need for F-22′s in any likely force on force engagement can be met by the existing number of airframes. Stealth is not the be all end all that many like to think, especially WVR. I do recall hearing an interesting comment though a while back somewhere (probably by a layperson, like myself, so don’t put any stock in it). A major part of the cost and complexity of the F-22 is the stealthy nature of it, the materials, maintenance and fragility of the thing. Stealth is only one of the advantages of the F-22. It is also QUITE maneuverable and has the non-trivial ability to super-cruise. What about the development of a variant aircraft that did away with the stealthy aspects of the F-22 (making it look like and probably be designated as a different design)? Keep and/or improve the structural, electronic and performance aspects while not having to pay for the stealth. Make as many parts as possible common to both, but have a lower cost version to do those jobs that don’t require stealth but where a significant improvement on the F-15 is desired. I know it will never happen and there are probably lots of problems with the notion, but it’s amusing to wonder.

   First off, great fucking album and I had to dig through my collection to find my copy but I did. Flipped through my CD booklet, unfortunately the artist wasn’t credited (Some dude named Hugh Gilmour is accredited for the re-issue design, but he is just a graphics artist and not a painter) so I had to delve further. I could not find the name of the artist anywhere online and it really started pissing me off, and I got too say, man, I am at the end o my rope. I really tried, and that René Magritte guy was all I was getting, though I know that to be incorrect. Sorry I couldn’t help you, I’ll let you know if I ever figure it out!

     I thank you for your valiant effort.What you found is all that I could scrap up,also.I cannot find the original cover anywhere around where I live.Nor have I even seen it in many years.If I recall correctly it was by a Frenchman.The part that I`m really vague on is when it was painted.Maybe in the 1870`s.Maybe.Yes,please let me know.Again,thanks.

   I saw this cover 5 minutes ago and I said who is the girl and who did the cover! I think that is the first time I saw the cover. I am familiar with Beck’s work, and I am a HUGE fan of the Yardbirds, but I wish I knew who the girl was and who did the cover!

    @vd00d.P-38 Lightning and the P-61 Black Widow night fighter.Note the hatch at the right hand side of the cockpit.That was for the radar operator/navigator.He had no ejection seat and had to manually extract himself from it and attempt to bail out if anything went wrong.Inevitably striking the tail assembly on his way out.It took a brave man to take that job!

    @RSIxidor: Lol… The tails are similar. In Tailspin they used a Conwing L-16 seaplane (aka SeaDuck)…

    I love this design though. I guess I have a thing for certain flavors of ugly planes. I like this, the Seaduck, the Brooklands Aerospace Optica OA-7, the A-10… All ugly, but beautiful planes…

   F-88.I did`nt notice that.There was precursor to the F-101 Voodoo (prototypes only)called “F-88″.MiG15 had two 23mm and one 37mm cannon.A lot of fire power compared with the F-86.It just had six 50 caliber machine guns.All later USAF aircraft had cannons.It also was smaller and lighter,thus had a higher climb rate and a marginally tighter turning radius.Speed was about the same.What made American pilots prevail in the Korean War was training.Which was far better than the Soviets,North Koreans or Chinese.

   And no one has thought to mention that it’s NATO call sign is the Fagot.

   I’m certain that the reference is to fire wood but it’s interesting that the Mig-15 is the only one of these aircraft that you don’t hear referred to by it’s call sign.

   @MarauderDeuce ,UN Forces,then NATO.Yea,they were a bit miffed when they ran across this thing in Korea.The USAF initially had nothing to counter it with but F-80`s and “Twin Mustang” F-82`s.Nowadays they`d probably call it a “Newfag”.
