The problem is not the assumption that self-defense is a legitimate purpose, of course it is. Just like a legitimate purpose for nuclear weapons is to win a war. That doesn't mean it's not also a horrible idea. The fact is, in my life I've known 3 people who have been shot. None by a burglar, none by an illegal firearm. Two of them died. One by his own hand, one playing soldier in his friends yard at the age of 12. I would not scrap the second amendment. I also wouldn't make high fructose corn syrup illegal. My wife and I inherited this truck from her dad. The transmission was slipping, the brakes wobbled, there was an ever present burning oil smell. We were not enthusiastic about keeping it. Then it got pancaked in a 6-car pileup just outside of Seattle, WA. After some work with a crowbar and hammer we made it to our destination 80 miles away, after which we decided to just take the insurance money to total it and drive it as far as it would go til it died.
That was 2 years ago. Since then it has made the round trip between the SF Bay Area and La Conner WA three times, as well as hauling many tons of gravel, wood chips and masonry for our various landscaping projects around here, not to mention towing around a 1 ton ball made out of bras (long story).
Now the registration is waaay expired, and there’s no way it would pass the WA inspection, not to mention getting a salvage title. We’re going to have to get rid of it sooner or later, and I’m really going to miss it.
That green tin lid jammed in the grill is the mechanism by which I aim the headlight. I guess its about time for another tape-job, too.

I think I remember Jesus helping the poor, not making and demanding that other people do it. Jesus never forcibly made another human being do anything. Why do so many people seem to think that if you don’t believe government should be allowed to make somebody take care of somebody else that means you are some hypocritical christian? I don’t want to give money to the government to give out to people. I give money to my church who then takes care of the needy and poor. If you want to help the poor, give them some of your own money. Go on, nobody is stopping you.

Render unto Ceaser? Anyone? BTW in my experience people that say they give money at church are usually the ones that drop a 5 in the plate and then eat all the coffee cake after the service and never stay to clean up.
Its none of your business what I do at church. But I don’t recall the last time we built any roads or bridges.

I believe the preamble says something about “promote the general welfare and insure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our prosperity”
Note that it says “GENERAL welfare” not just “the welfare of the rich and well connected”

The Preamble is just a header; What we must remember is that the main argument against the bill of rights was that it was not needed because the Federal Government did not have the authority to do anything other then what was clearly spelled out.
So again. Cite me the line in the Constitution where a lazy piece of shit druggy gets a check.

LOL yeah. Jesus only ate food that he miracled for himself. Yes, this is the central message of the Bible. I forgot that Jesus was a free-market capitalist now. The loaves and fishes was just trickle-down economics, too. And that bit about the rich man and the camel and the eye of the needle was advocating for smaller camels and bigger needles. I spend a lot of time in South America and my GF is from the EU – trust me, when The world laughs about America it’s not the leftists they are laughing about.
Calling the seriously poor “lazy and stupid” is exactly the sort of thing they laugh about. As if someone who’s starving to death in the street does so because they just can’t be bothered to feed themselves.
