German communist leaders and founders of the Communist Party of Germany. Both were murdered by Freikorps on January 15th, 1919, shortly after the Spartacist uprising.

Today (Dec 23rd) is his 90th birthday. He was Federal Germany’s Secretary of Defence from ’69 – ’72, Secretary of Treasury from ’72 – ’74 and Federal Chancellor from ’74 – ’82. He was also the co-founder of what is the G8 today. Not politically active anymore, he still is one of Germany’s most popular politicians. The pictures were taken (1) in the early 70′s, (2) 1974 and (3) 2001.
