It would have been more profound without the last line. Still powerful.
-
That was kind of the point from the start, wasn’t it? Weren’t Adam and Eve eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because, basically, they had become convinced they were god’s equal, and could handle his knowledge?
Sin isn’t sin because it’s bad but, because it’s god’s modus operandi and he doesn’t like humans on his turf.
-
It never made any sense to me. Jesus H Dawkins, how can you blame them for eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil if they didn’t have knowledge of good and evil? They had no way of knowing it was wrong until AFTER they ate the fruit. Either god is stupid or a total dick. This is just one of the many many ways the bible is it’s own the best argument against itself.
-
Haven’t you guys all realized this yet?
God just loves trolling.
-
No he doesn’t, he doesn’t exist
-
of course not, but when enough people invest into it with belief, then they create a character.
and in my eyes, this character is a massive troll.
-
Oh boy… Eve again. Lilith was the first woman. Christians know so little about their own religion.
-
Not all denominations acknowledge Adams first wife.
-
Lilith was just further bullshit made up long after the original bullshit was written. There was no Lilith or biblical Eve. There was only Mitochondrial Eve and her forgotten suitors.
-
…aaand you totally missed the entire point in order to spread propaganda and belittle others. You sound like you have hairy armpits.
-
Sinning doesn’t mean you end up in hell when you die, it means you punish yourself while you are alive. Like karma. Like horrible self enforced karma.
Most of the things on the list are things humans have done. The church want money? So God is greedy? Um… the CHURCH want money. Gods doesnt want money she’s fucking loaded. Seriously I saw him on cribs he has like 15 cars.
God punishes people for not believing? Nope. Oh sorry the Bible says that? The Bible written by…..men? Yes that one. Fuckin aye.

wait, is….god raping uncle sam?
oh no.
-
It’s not immoral if God does it.
God is love, ergo his wiener invasion is a sign of love.
-
It looks like he is enjoying himself.
-
Stalin did it better, I mean fucking his nation.
Another proof of atheists’ superiority.
-
Stalin never exterminated all life (save a handful) in his nation.
God wins again!
-
He exterminated enough to be considered a bad man.
-
You don’t say.
That does imply that Yahweh is a bad god, so I’ll let your flash of insight go unrewarded for now.
-
I never said I was a proponent of either. I’ll tell you know, I am not.
Of course, if I was a believer, I’d say that He is God and He is all-knowing and He has the right to end the lives of any He chooses.
There’s really not a way to argue against that.
-
I’m not a big fan of the “might makes right” argument.
Although technically true, I’m not sure if it’s a good argument for morality.
-
The artist of this aberration, should be ashamed of themselves! GOD gave us free will, because he wanted so badly for us to willingly ‘choose’ him. Surely, his heart was broken, when his child who drew this, apparently chose to reject him instead. Some might say, that the blessing of free will, was GOD’S way of ‘thinning the heard’ so to speak … obviously, it is working.
-
You’re kidding, right?
-
Nope …
I’m dead serious.

this is funny, because all 3 of those religions have made awesome contributions to civilization in the realms of math, words, law, culture and science.
step out side the box of labels, folks. and let’s do this thang.
-
And also held them back.
-
Exactly. Think how much further these contributors to society could have gone, if they weren’t in danger of being killed or tortured, lest they discover the “wrong” thing. (One of those “wrong” things being that religion itself was holding them back.)
Galileo being only the most egregious example. How much earlier would Darwin’s theory have been developed, if society wasn’t suffused with the mistaken notion that they knew all the answers already to those fundamental questions?
How many human beings were killed because they were the wrong religion, and by dying were unable to contribute to society?
Cathedrals are nice. So are pyramids. Unless you’re the slave that has to build them.

You say Galileo? I say Newton and Copernicus.
You say Darwin? I say Mendel.

I am not a religious person by any means, but quoting misinformation to further your argument is crap.
I totally agree that way too many people have died in the name of religion. But if they hadn’t, then the world population would probably twice as high as it is now.
Ever thought of that?
-
I agree with you about the pyramids, but as for war and population size, I disagree.
People fight over 2 things primarily. Ideology (which would still exist, free of religion) and resources. Since population growth would force people to seek more resources, we would still have war.
Removing religion doesn’t mean that we’re going to see eye to eye with everyone either. We’re just going to have different reason’s then we do now.
I do agree with puulaahi and Skat that religious beliefs have held us back in general. Religion isn’t what discovered math or science. People did, and they may or may not have discovered more if large, powerful groups (organized religion) weren’t hindering their research.
-
The Roman Catholic ban on contraception sure isn’t helping your argument
-
I propose that Darwins theory couldnt be developed any earlier.
Everything happens in its proper order.
The little steps we’ve taken have led to an accepted view of science, and the heretical theories now have weight.
Saying now that religion is as important as science, is comparable to the people of old saying the earth is round. Nobody will believe those raving lunatics until we come up with some hard evidence.
Would you have believed Galileo’s claims back in the day? Or would you be right at the front of the cue to throw vegetables at him?
-
Agreed, Anadin.
Everything happens for one reason or another in the order that it does. I am not a person to just take one side of an argument. Faith is not a black and white type situation. Like everything else in this world, there are many shades or grey in between. We just have to keep an open mind.
-
AANNNDDDD
We romanticise people like Galileo, like everybody else was unimaginative and doing as they are told, when this tearaway Galileo comes up with all these crazy ideas – but SHOCK! – the church persecute him.
Realistically there was probably scores of people with wacky ideas, putting strange fantasies into peoples minds. We know how dangerous ideas can be. The only way the church could keep people in line was to squash these revolutionary ideas.
Thank fuck we have science to guide us now.
-
“Would you have believed Galileo’s claims back in the day?”
They accepted the Earth as spherical on empirical grounds in Aristotle’s day, if it wasn’t for the church Galileo wouldn’t have had to prove it again.
-
“by dying were unable to contribute to society”
By dying they DID contribute to society. Thats the most many of us can hope to accomplish.
The very fact we can have discussions like this today are a direct result of people dying for their ideas and beliefs. So fuck anybody that wants to piss on other peoples ideas.
-
Yes Nate I totally feel you there.
It is unfortunate some people wish to take any spiritual teaching at face value, and over-react to a book that tells them to do / not do things.
You can just read it and make up your own mind y’know peeps.
You don’t HAVE to do anything.
The only person holding your mind hostage is YOU.
-
That’s right, and I will cut off your thumb to send to your parents.
I’m sure you understand, it’s just business.
-

“Religion” didn’t do shit. The measured study of the cosmos advanced human civilization.
-
You cant study shit without sufficient mental coherence and analytical skills.
Much of that comes from ‘religion’
-
How on earth does religion promote mental coherence?
How on earth does religion promote analytical skills?
-
Try to approach it as a study of the mind, not a series of tales to be taken literally.
-
Fine. Don’t answer my question
-
Ok.
One example is buddhist ideals.
They learn to concentrate on one thing until their mind is as sharp as a knife.
They meditate on simple impossible questions and explore their inner being.
Now thats a real mental workout.
You can apply similar reasoning to prayer – which is only really a meditation. Answers from ‘god’ may come from your inner being. But call it what you will.
Catholic Rosary beads remind me of meditation also, a way of training your mind to focus and not meander all over the place.
Dream interpretation is rife in the bible. Before we had microscopes and petri dishes this was a major science.
How many scientific discoveries benefit from ideas formulated in dreams? Lots I bet.
-
Okay, I’ll give you that those are two examples to the effect of what you were saying… Almost.
You can do meditate without religion, however. Also, I’m not quite sure any of the practices you mentioned count as being analytical. Sure, focused thinking is admirable, but it doesn’t require you to analyze the subject in a scientific manner.
I’m not quite sure what you mean when you say a mind is sharp as a knife, but if such a mind is focused on inane things like “If a tree falls in the forest…” or “Where does the first go when you open your hand” then I’d say it’s wasted.
You don’t need to interpret dreams to be inspired by them, so I don’t even know what this has got to do with anything. Now, I admit I know little about dream interpretation, so correct me if I’m wrong here. I’m going to assume that trying to find meaning in dreams is at best on the flakier side of Freudian psychology and at worst on par with astrology.
How many scientific ideas have been shot down because they contradicted dogma? Lots, I bet.
-
You’ll give me any examples I give because I am right, thankyou very much
And given enough time and motivation I could fill pages with examples.
YES You can meditate without religion! I can see your getting the idea now. But without meditation to compare it to what would you call it? Religion has given us motivation and structure to hone these practices of self improvement. When I do my dishes I am meditating. If you look into zen buddhism you’ll see menial tasks are often sought after for the calming / focusing effect they have on the brain. We are daily overwhelmed with information, more so nowadays – but in the past peoples minds would have been forever troubled with fantastical ideas, and no way to properly explain themselves, mixed in with all the white noise of living in a enclosed society. To master the focusing of the mind was a quantum leap we can only dream about.
Now do me a favour, watch some you-tube pop sensations, watch a few hours of TV soaps and commercials, go spend some time with gossipy relatives – then try to do some analytical work.
Next exercise for an hour, then meditate for 4 hours. Calm your mind totally, see memories and random impulses form in your minds eye, but learn to let them dissapate and dissolve. All the time control your breathing and imagine the point of a knife. Thats your mind, that knife – the longer and more undisturbed you can hold that clear image the better. Now try that analytical work again. My moneys on the post-meditation work. No white noise. No distractions. Serenity. You use ‘scientific’ as a description of a way of thinking, but science is a word for describing proven facts. The total opposite of thought. Thought is about creating.
The point of:
“If a tree falls in the forest…”
Or a Koan as they are known, is to learn to think outside of your comfort zone, outside the box, it is to enhance and stimulate your creative thought patterns. You mind is a machine and it cannot become great without exercise.
Much dream enterpretation is murky Freudian psychology / on par with astrology. But there is some deep stuff there. I particulary like Jungs work around archetypes. In my experience dreams can only be interpreted by the dreamer. It is your subconscious after all – and if you are honest with yourself you know what your dreams mean. Of course you’ll have lots of dreams of random shit, but use your own judgement to find the important ones.
-
But without meditation to compare it to what would you call it?
Compare meditation to meditation? What are you talking about? You did understand that religion wasn’t required, right?
I ignored the rest of the post since it was just New Age babble. Sorry.
-
Then you’re an idiot and I give up.
You clearly have trouble identifying ‘new age babble’.
-
Thomas Aquinas.
-
Wrong.
-
Logically fallacy. Correlation does not imply causation.
-
What does Areosmith have to do with religion?
-
What does Aerosmith have to do with religion?
-
The sad thing is the person who made this is the most closed minded of all and is too stupid to see the irony of them even thinking of making this picture.
Religion is like “big business”. Simpleton dipshits like to blame large faceless organizations so nobody bothers calling them out on being completely full of shit. If anyone does ask them what they’re talking about they can just ramble on and on until the reasonable person loses interest. Then hippyfag can go back to being a leech on whatever country they’re in and their parents.
Nobody is enlightened beyond religion. That’s stupid thinking.
-
Lots of people are enlightened beyond religion, but someone like yourself would quite obviously not understand the reasons why.
That’s why there are religious people.
-
I’m not baptised and you’re wrong and you have shown you suffer from exactly what I stated.
You’re not smarter than billions of other people and thousands of years of history. Seriously you’re just making an ass of yourself trying to win your silly little argument.
No one ever in history has ever or could be enlightened beyond religion and people who think they are just end up looking dumb. The lack of real answers is the only fact and science is about as sensible as religion.
-
I’m more educated and informed than the vast majority of those that have gone before me, and you.
You depend more on science than you do on religion, which makes dirty, dirty lies of your words.
Don’t lie for Jesus, he wouldn’t appreciate it.
-
But but if we don’t sin he died for nothing!
-
That didn’t even make any sense.
You’re not smarter than anyone here and have never made a valid point.
Casemods is your superior in every way.
-
Aww. That really hurts, coming from you, Navi.
Casemods has his moments, true. I like how he shows how almost everyone on MCS is trollbait. People make comments like “this dumb thing is almost as dumb as casemods!” and get plenty of thumbs up, believing that’s a sign of their cleverness.
It’s really a sign of a lack of originality.
-
“No one ever in history has ever or could be enlightened beyond religion”
Can we swap the word ‘religion’ for ‘sprituality’ – then people who haven’t had the benefit (ahem) of organised religion can be enlightened too?
-
I think you’ve missed the point.
But swap away.
-
You mean one can only be enlightened through organised religion? Dude that sucks.
Take for instance a tribe in the rainforest. No other human contact. Their shaman is most likely enlightened. Nobody can eat that many magic mushrooms and NOT get enlightened. Modern organised religion with all its traditions and bureaucracy is not a pre-requisite for evolution of the spirit.
-
I wear tight clothing, high heeled shoessssssss
It doesn’t mean that I’m a prostitute, no no!
I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes
That doesn’t mean that I’m out sellin’ dope no no no….
-
“I’m more educated and informed than the vast majority of those that have gone before me, and you.”
I laughed.
-
I laughed when your god failed to rapture you Saturday.
Perhaps that’s a sign that there are no Christians worthy of going to heaven. Who knows!
-
I got raptured, but came back to insult casemods one last time
-
Try again.
To paraphrase Dr. King, “Free at last, thanks to free thought, free at last.
Religion and science have been at ware sense day one. Slowly science is winning. Because of what it is to religion, the evolution battle will probably be the last great battle between the two. Creation is the foundation of most imaginary, invisible friend religions. When evolution takes its place in all of the science world, religion, as we know it will be near its end.
And if I may say so, the sooner, the better.

They accepted the Earth as spherical on empirical grounds in Aristotle’s day, if it wasn’t for the church Galileo wouldn’t have had to prove it again.

The only person holding your mind hostage is YOU.-
That’s right, and I will cut off your thumb to send to your parents.
I’m sure you understand, it’s just business.

-
You’ll give me any examples I give because I am right, thankyou very much
And given enough time and motivation I could fill pages with examples.YES You can meditate without religion!
You mind is a machine and it cannot become great without exercise.Much dream enterpretation is murky Freudian psychology / on par with astrology.

-
-
“No one ever in history has ever or could be enlightened beyond religion”

Who knows!
-
I got raptured, but came back to insult casemods one last time
-

-

That’s amazing.
The lighting/colors of the trees and bushes don’t match up though.
If it’s legit, that’s pretty impressive.
Must have been a popular highway.
Not that it takes 6 days to fix something like that.
6 days is really slow.
But with all the other shit going on, and how long it takes USA cities to fix shit, it’s impressive.
Guess they don’t want to be reminded of the karma for pearl harbor.
-
You almost got me. I was all set to impulsively rage on you for being one of the douchebags who completely forget that the USA embargo’d Japan and antagonized the shit out of them before Pearl Harbor, and nuked their cities off the face of the Earth afterwards. I’m pretty sure WE still have some shitty karma for that.
Then I remembered I saw a collage of douchebags like that.

Then I remembered all of the negative characteristics you exhibit, trolling among them.

6 Days is actually pretty fast.
As a man who works as an inspector in road construction, I’m impressed (if its legit, of course). But more than likely they didn’t meet any of the compaction requirements for such a project (which is 100 percent acceptable because of the given situation).
I’m amazed at how thick that asphalt is in the first picture. They did a lot of overlays.

The road was re-graded in less than 4 days, and likely paved in 5.

The thing about emergency response in Japan is, everyone is involved. From schoolteachers to QA engineers. For this picture, you’re looking at the result of the hard work of probably a few dozen engineers and hard hat blue-collar workers, plus maybe another dozen formerly unemployed people from the local area.
The thing that gets me is the overblown media response. Sure, it’s great that everyone’s pitching in to whatever local Japan-only relief fund. But I’m really sick of people walking up to me and asking how I’m coping with the aftermath. Dude. I’m a 4th-gen Japanese-American. The relatives I know about are something like cousins 5th-removed. We have no contact; we do not care about each other. But I can’t just say that. Instead I have to just nod my head in thanks and be appreciative of the support.
Out of all the scary 2-minute shaking that the USGS says was an 8.9 quake, a grand total of 1 person died in Tokyo. The tsunami killed an estimated 9500 in the NE corner of Honshu, mostly due to people not wanting to leave their homes. They had a full hour’s warning to leave the area, but they stayed because they figured their harbor’s seawall would deal with the waves as it has for dozens of tsunamis before. These numbers compare to over 200,000 killed in Bangladesh, or 300,000 in Haiti from direct earthquake damage. Or about 1600 in Chile, with another 2 million left homeless.
Here’s an interesting perspective post from someone who worked inland from Tokyo during the quake:
Some Perspective on the Japan Earthquake

Japan, Fakku Un!!!

I’d estimate it would take 2-3 years to repair that here in Seattle. And in the end, there would still be large steel plates on the road in random places.

Wow, and in six months they haven’t managed to fill a pothole here big enough to cripple a tractor. Apparently I need to move to Japan, you know, when all the tsunami and earthquake damage is repaired in 3 months.

Orly?
From the Mirriam-Webster dictionary: 4. the cause of truth or justice.
Furthermore, “doing what is right” can be defined as choosing to act according to what will, in the end, preserve the well-being, mental and physical, of society/humanity, on a plural or singular level.

This makes no sense what so ever.
How can you have a common morality without somebody telling you what it is. My idea of “right” is not the same as yours. Without some sort of religious ideals to base it upon, there is no common morality. Therefore if morality is doing the right thing, and the right thing does not have a definition, then there is no morality.
I’m sorry, but if you are an atheist, then just be intellectually honest with yourself and quit trying to take some sort of high horse like being atheist is somehow more “moral”.
If there is no God, then there are no rules. There are no repercussions outside of this life. So therefore the only rules you have to follow are the ones that enable you to have the most freedom to do whatever you want.
So therefore, the only rules are to do whatever you can get away with.
-
If you had ever studied even basic philosophy, you would have read the dialogue of “Euthyphro” which directly addresses your point. Quick summary: Even you have a religious source for morality, what makes that “right”? Is morality just some arbitrary list to “thou shalt nots” handed out by an incomprehensible deity? Or is there a pattern that’s decipherable by humans? And if there is some predetermining pattern of morality, then we don’t need a god to tell us what’s right and wrong, because we can figure it out by itself. So either morality is completely random or we don’t need god.
-
“My idea of “right” is not the same as yours.”
QFT. If God is real, then it’s morally acceptable for me to beat my slaves. It’s morally acceptable to immolate my virgin daughter if I think there’s a chance God helped me win a fight. Pedophilia, murder, disfigurement, genital mutilation and the subjugation of women are all not only morally acceptable, but are in fact specifically mandated by God.
If we were to actually follow the teaching of Jesus and rules set forth by God, we’d be living in a pacifist Communist world state run by a Totalitarian Dictator. If you openly profess to sweat fealty to this bronze-age manuscript, you’re declaring yourself an enemy of Capitalism, Democracy, humanity, liberty, equality and the pursuit of happiness.
-
Because God wrote the bible…..
-
Well, if it wasn’t written, or at least dictated, by God, that would only strengthen the argument that the Abrahamic Faiths have nothing to offer exclusively for virtues, values or morals, and the entire enterprise becomes completely fabricated and even more revolting.
-
If holy books have no relation to God then we have no other, ahem, “proof” (LOL) that it exists, what it is like, what are its aims or anything.
-
God wrote the bible, but we created the concept of God.
How can God be perfect, yet be vengeful and peaceful at the same time? Why allow evil to exist? Why allow Satan to fall from grace and oppose him? Why allow Eve to give Adam the apple? The Greek Gods were flawed. Yet one all powerful God is supposed to have allowed people to follow false deities even into modern day? Why didn’t the Greeks, Romans, Chinese or Japanese all worship him from the get go? What about the caveman?
We created the concept of God/s, and as our morality has changed, so to has our concept of God.
As much as I hate to paraphase a line from Tron:
He can’t create the perfect universe, because we don’t know what that is. We still don’t. We probably never will.
-
This is just sad.
“If I’m not told what to do, how can I know what to do?”
You exemplify what the picture is about.
-
I think everyone took me the wrong way. I’m not in support of religion. I openly admit that without a religion, the only basis for my morality is me. I was only going through the logical reasoning that explains my statement: “So therefore, the only rules are to do whatever you can get away with.”
So I am with all of you guys. Except that I encourage all of the people who believe in their religion, so long as their beliefs give them an inherent disadvantage over me in attaining what ever it is that I want.
-
It’s possible that our morality can actually be genetically ingrained in us via evolution. I wish I could remember where and under what circumstances I got this idea. It was fairly recent, w/in the last two weeks. Anyone have info on this?
-
Sam Harris has some insight into this, as does Richard Dawkins.

There is an ideological war going on. If the religious fundamentalist get the upper-hand, no one will be allowed to co-exist for shit. There are powerful factions at work that will stop at nothing short of a Christian version of Saudi Arabia or Iran. I will concede that atheists can be just as bad, but we’re not anywhere close to winning. So at this point, we’re not the ones you need to worry about.
-
“close to winning” in the Christian States of America, you mean. Try to go somewhere here and say “Oh yeah, howzabout we ban them devilution books at school?” or “Lets plant the Ten Commandments statue out this here court o’ justice” and you’ll be laughed at all the way home where your sexy scandinavian wife will promptly pack up and leave.

patientized has never left Delaware.
Go visit north London. Its like Morocco. Pretty much exactly like Morocco. Morocco sucks.
Oh and the Netherlands is heavily Christian btw. Your “hot Scandinavian wife” is a church goer, fuckstick.
Morality is subjective. Religious morality is absolute. When one person’s definition they land on prevents them from leading a productive life religion tends to make the necessary adjustments so they can live longer and happier. I don’t know what’s so scary about that. If you don’t like the crazy contingent of the religious crowd then ignore them like anyone with a brain ignores the faggots and hispter/hippy assholes who prance around any given downtown core desperate for a cause.
Every time I see one of these stupid anti religious posts or those pictures of the idiots with signs standing beside the other idiots with signs I’m amazed. The fucking losers showing up to protest protesters have no clue what so ever that they look just as stupid as the people they’re making fun of. At least the religious ones do it because of their absolute faith. The ones holding the signs mocking them are just there because they’re assholes.
-
@Navi: Just checking… You don’t really think the Netherlands is located in Scandinavia, are you?
As for the point you made about religious morality being absolute: it is not.
(Ignoring contradictions in the bible). All morally reprehensible things (killing children, rape, genocide) can be made to be moral if your god gives the go ahead.
Also, your god can date rape a woman and Christians will assure you that everything’s just fine.
So much for absolute morality.
Next!
-
How exactly have christians been succesful?
If Christians and other religious factions hold an 85% majority in the General population then why is it that Attempts at banning the teaching of Science such as evolution has ultimately failed? Even when the bans were successful they were eventually overturned; Why is that? If what you say is true then it would stand to reason that in a pre-dominantly religious nation all attempts at passing any theological based legislation should be passed with relative ease But this is NOT the case. The most we have right now is a legal requirement for creationism to be taught alongside evolution, and even that is being challenged.
-
The constitution gets in the way.
Though, I’m sad to say, many science teachers avoid teaching evolution just because of the controversy So I wouldn’t say their attack on science has failed completely.

“Let’s base our religion on the example set by someone that would kill his own child to please the voice in his head!”

Technically Christians are free to pick and choose which parts of the “first movie” they like or don’t like because their god basically said, “Whoops. Guess I’m not infallible. I take back all my old vengeful ‘n’ jealous god stuff, and let’s just say we start over since you killed my-son-who-is-also-me.” My new testament knowledge is weaker than old, but I think it’s Mark 7:something.
That’s why Christians ignore stuff in the old testament like selling your daughter into slavery or cutting off a woman’s hand for touching your balls, but still take the parts that are anti-homosexual or just the 10 commandments in general. Pick ‘n’ choose your own religion!
-
They ignore the Old Testament because they live in a modern society. Jesus himself said that none of the old laws should be ignored.
Stoning children is illegal, so Christians choose to obey man’s law, rather than their god’s.
Also, I suspect that they know their god is batshit crazy.
-
Huh.
I have been saying this quote for years, just note tired to well into a movie theme.
Except for the mormon part, which makes it even better.

I think spidey’s got a chance with his spidey senses and genius intellect.

-

One thing i have noticed is that internet-atheists tend to be major dick-holes who worship at the altar of Dawkins. In my experience the dick-head atheists outnumber the cool ones.
Because they think that by actively disbelieving in something it somehow makes them magically smarter than people who believe in theologies.
So far the worst thing i have seen from the christian camp is attempts at banning the teaching of evolution and maybe a few defacing of atheist billboards. I know here in SC we have a road that is sponsored by the secular humanist society and guess what? Nobody has defaced it.
The fact of the matter is that many christians are not science fearing mysognistic racists who think the earth was created in six literal days 6,000 years ago.
Christ i am so sick of this bigotry. You know what i do when i meet an atheist in real life? I treat him like i would a fellow christian. You know why? Because jesus said “love thy neighbor as thyself.” It’s a simple concept that any person of any faith (or lack thereof) can get behind.
You know what happens when i meet an atheist online?
I have to argue for the next three fucking hours on why i am entitled to my belief. I have to deal with endless ad-hominem remarks towards myself and fellow believers.
Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of christian crazies out there. Believe me i know from first hand experience the bullshit people try to justify with their religious beliefs. Hell my fiance and i will even get into arguments over religion and her and i both believe in the same god. Conflict in one form is inevitable. But it doesn’t mean you need to be a dick about it.
-
What is so dickish about the image?
Is it not a realistic expression of the results gained via research as opposed to prayer? Is pointing out reality dickish?
Yes, many religious people study the sciences, and good for them. But prayer accomplishes nothing at all.
As for the billboards, good for SC for not defacing them. But what is your point? Is that really the worst you can think of when it comes to acts of your fellow Christians against atheists?
-
Seriously? That’s the worst you’ve seen from Christians? I could write you a list longer than my leg with things worse than that.
Homophobia is innate in Christianity. “Witches” get killed today by Christians. Christianity is helping spread aids in Africa. Christianity has a big part in several wars, and one of them is the conflict in Israel. Most Christians support a ring of pedophiles and that is not where the child abuse ends. Christians that actually believe that Jesus answers prayers don’t go to the doctor (good thing you don’t believe prayer works, eh?).
As I said, I could go on and on. If you don’t like being treated like someone that believes in superstition for dumb reasons, perhaps you should abandon that not-so-modern belief system.
-

Dear angry, resentful athiest,
Thank you for helping to prove my point. Although my question was not actually answered, only argued.
Christianity is spreading Aids in Africa? Really? Please draw me a picture and use small words. I can’t wait to hear this one. But please be sure to link your story to the part the rest of us already know, so that it makes sense, in a movie/book/magazine story kind of way.
The rest of your complaints are specific to the Catholic Church or maybe the Puritans or Quakers, which is like blaming all Americans for what happens in Alabama trailer parks. Just because 1 person or a small group of people who happen to be Christian believe something or behave a certain way, does not mean that all Christians are to blame. I do not hold all non-Christians responsible for your behavior or ignorance, as the case may be. Hitler hated the Jews because he hated his Jewish nanny. His anger and ignorance went unchecked by his family and peers. He blamed an entire race and religion for the actions of one person. (Sound familiar).
I don’t blame my black friends when a black hoodlum steals my car stereo. I don’t blame my Jewish friends when one of my Jewish clients refuses to pay the bill. I don’t blame my gay friends or my gay family member when a gay person walks down the street naked in a gay pride parade. I don’t blame my catholic family members when the Pope protects the pedophiles that work in his church. And, I don’t blame the rest of MCS when Casemods says something stupid. (Poor guy just needs a friend.)
BTW, the vast majority of Christians practice science based health care and have a typical view of the value of science in our lives, while realizing that we (humans) do NOT have all the answer yet, and yet they still choose to have faith. This is based on personal experience, not just blindly following what somebody tells us because it is in a book. Sure, children are raised to believe what their parents believe, but that is what all parents do (OK, most parents). That is called being a parent.
There are always exceptions and always those that take advantage. Scientists have the same problems in their community.
I was commenting only on what I see here, not making a generalization about all non-Christians or all athiests.
I have lots of friends who are not Christian or whom have no faith at all, and we are good friends who respect each other. We can even discuss science and religious theory and drink a beer without hating on each other.
Finally, the word Homophobia is greatly over used. Having a difference of opinion does not equal a fear of the subject. If I disagree with cannibalism, that does not make me cannibalphobic. If I choose not to be a communist, that does not make me socialism-phobic (or whatever conjugation you like). Just because a person or a group (christians, republicans, whomever) does/do not agree with, support, or otherwise participate in homosexuality, does NOT mean that they are afraid. It means the disagree. Get a Fucking Dictionary, please.
OK, so thank you for reading my rant. Comment or vote or wtf ever makes you feel better.
-
(I’m not sure if you noticed that I was replying to somebody else, that might explain why you think I didn’t answer your question.)
“Christianity is spreading Aids in Africa? Really? Please draw me a picture and use small words. ”
Use google to find your way to what the Catholic church is doing in Africa, then look for a mention of condoms. I can’t believe you’re not aware of this. (In simple words, google: catholic africa condoms).
“The rest of your complaints are specific to the Catholic Church ”
Actually the pedophile thing and the one I just mentioned are the only things tied to Catholicism (not saying pedophilia or condom bans do not occur in other parts of Christianity).
So much for dodging the bullet, eh?
“Just because 1 person or a small group of people who happen to be Christian believe something or behave a certain way”
What if the *majority* of Christians are Catholics? Or if not that, then it is the biggest denomination by far. I guess you didn’t think of that.
“I do not hold all non-Christians responsible for your behavior or ignorance, as the case may be. Hitler hated the Jews because he hated his Jewish nanny.”
That would be pretty stupid, as non-Christians do not have any common tenets. As for anti-semitism, it was not uncommon as it was basically preached in church since forever. Hitler may have hated Jews because his nanny was one, but anti-semitism has firm roots in Christianity.
“He blamed an entire race and religion for the actions of one person. (Sound familiar).”
Was that a question? In any case, I don’t do that. I was replying to someone that claimed that he had only seen some minor things being done by Christians, and I could do better than him. Some faults, like I’ve already said, are because of the religion itself (or rather its holy text). So you can’t get away from the horrible things without ignoring huge chunks of the bible.
“BTW, the vast majority of Christians practice science based health care and have a typical view of the value of science in our lives, while realizing that we (humans) do NOT have all the answer yet, and yet they still choose to have faith. ”
I know they do, if they have the alternative of modern medicine. My point was that that same majority does *not* trust prayer to work at all.
Go team Jesus?
“There are always exceptions and always those that take advantage. Scientists have the same problems in their community.”
That’s pretty vague. Care to give an example?
“Finally, the word Homophobia is greatly over used. Having a difference of opinion does not equal a fear of the subject. ”
I was using the word in the colloquial sense. The bible is very clear about its views on male homosexuals. And a Christian who wanted to restrict the rights of gay men would act in accordance with their god’s will. Same thing with killing witches: your god says it’s A-okay.
“OK, so thank you for reading my rant. Comment or vote or wtf ever makes you feel better.”
You’re welcome. It does make me feel better to correct Christians.
-
“Christianity is spreading Aids in Africa? Really?”
Yes, it is, by actually telling their people that using a condom can actually get you aids, read up sparky..
-
Bushman, you need to get out on the internet more. There are plenty of attacks on atheism out there.
If you really can’t see why atheists might be angry that religion holds far too much influence on political decision making throughout the world, that it causes active psychological harm (many suffer from a constant fear of hell), or that it relies on scamming people out of time and money, then I don’t think I can help you.
-
^^This…on religion.
-
Did you see the pope saying that atheists are nazis? I guess you missed that, huh?
-
Ironic, since the Nazis were largely church-going Christians -
-
also just as ironic, the pope was a member of the hitler youth. pot calling the kettle…
-
Are you kidding me ?
Almost everyday the %85 accuse the less than %17 of trying to shove their Atheist views down their throats, it’s so laughable it’s sad…

As an Athiest myself i feel sorry for Bible bashers , i mean Burning bushes , loaves and fishes , rising from the Dead ADAM and EVE WTF people must thing we were born yesterday…..The Bible is a wonderfull Story but that is all it is a Freakin Story.
Some people are so dumb

Christ dude, imagine being a christian and trying to explain to them why they shouldn’t take the bible as literal as they do. It’s like talking to a freaking wall, they won’t even listen to their fellow christians.
-
I’ve just stopped. It just gets boring. Every time we get a new theist or atheist we go thru this shit. Though I gotta admit I do get a kick out of some of the pro atheist pics. I also think that atheists feel like we finally get to say what we think to a relatively large audience.

I hope you enjoy evangelizing as much as we do.
I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that some people think belief in God prevents acknowledging any benefit of scientific thought OR VICE VERSA
YOU FCKING CHILDREN
-
Either god created the sun after the earth, or earth came about after the sun. If you believe that the bible is right you have to ignore science.
I take it you’re one of the diet Christians that ignore large chunks of the stories that Jesus believed to be true?
What would Spock say about that logic?
-
“If you believe that the bible is right you have to ignore science.”
I disagree with the bandwagon-riding, incomplete theory of evolution because I believe in a Creator, and so that means that I can’t believe e=mc^2. Glad you told me, because that makes sense.
“Jesus isn’t after your ipad” was the smartest thing said in this thread. How can you dense-ass asses not realize yet that the far extreme doesn’t represent the whole?
I guess all black people are thugs, all white people are trashy, all blondes are dumb, and all jews are greedy.
With the amount of trolling i’ve done, I can’t believe I still get suckered into these pools of pure fucking ignorance. I told “Nyoki” to enjoy evangelizing, the rest of you can enjoy witch hunting.
-
You don’t believe in evolution? Then I can only assume that you don’t understand it or that you have a belief that contradicts science. Thanks for proving my point.
The rest of your comment was pretty much just rambling, so I’ll ignore it until someone comes along to translate.
-
What evangelizing was I spouting? I said I was tired of the same argument over and over again. Lotus and I get along just fine and we opposite views on theism, though on religion we agree more and he’s as tired of this crap as I am. I’m just not into it anymore. I loved to argue it in classes and amongst groups when I was in my twenties. In my mid forties it just doesn’t hold my attention.
You’ve been here long enough to know most of my views if you’ve been paying attention. Most anti-theist stuff I post is a bit of trolling and tweaking some religious types. Being against religion is not the same as being against people who believe.
-
Extreme religious folks and atheists need to dish it out 50′s greaser vs square knife fight style. So they can both STFU ALREADY.
-
fuck yea, I’m keen to stab a religious nut! I might even come out alive due to the magic of medical treatment and stab vests over praying the stab wounds away!
-
What would be cool would be after the fight the atheists get doctors with the latest med tech and the Xians can only pray for their wounded.
-
The reason I call myself an agnostic is because if I call myself an atheist I will be aligning myself with a group that is predominantly formed of proselytizing cuntbags who in practice behave not so differently from their aggro-Christian counterparts.
-
bus you ARE a cunt, so do not be afraid.
-
It’s okay that you call yourself that; the rest of us understand that “agnostic” is just another word for “atheist without a spine”.
I’m tempted to call you an atheist without a brain too, but I know you’re not dumb enough to really believe that “atheist proselytizing” is anywhere close to the Christian kind.
-
I’ve never heard of an Atheist burning anyone at the stake.
-
Depending on who you burn, that might get some converts.
-
I don’t see how. Each side protests equally belligerently about the existence or nonexistence of a god character. Aggressive atheism has become just another belief system to shout about.
-
Oh, like how atheists force the lack of belief in all gods into school? How atheists insist that we put “in Dawkins we trust” on money? Or maybe how atheists give food to homeless people only if they know how to critique Pascal’s Wager?
Let me know when atheists veto life-saving treatments because of something PZ Myers said, or restrict a minority’s rights because Darwin invented marriage.
So next time you see an atheist knocking on your door on a Saturday morning to give you the bad news, or a humanist going around the world taking money from dictators like Mother Theresa did, remember how much like Christianity atheism is.
-
I’m talking about an internet-forum size platform, and I’m forced to believe you’re deliberately misstating the context because otherwise this whole discussions been a waste of time.
Woops, it was a waste of time anyway, oh dear.
-
Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see.
Waste of time for you, perhaps.
I don’t agree. But then again, I won this argument.
-
Keep science in school and religion in Church..that’s where they belong after all…again, funny the Majority crying the minority is trying to shove something (science) down their throats…

Quit taking the bait. Jesus isn’t after your ipad.

Jesus can have my iPad. That shit sucks anyways.

This is why canada gets no respect

Not my iPad, he wants 10% of my earnings.
How is paying all that money going to prevent me from dying, btw?

It’s not Jesus I’m worried about, it’s his followers -

You guys are missing the boat by down voting Navi.
He posted some genuinely entertaining crazy there. It’s a new level for even him.
Normally his just a loud moth compulsive liar, but this time he’s lashing out at the people who created a polio vaccine and saved millions of lives.
That some epic derp there.
-
Down-voting is for morons that can’t defend their position.
-
I agree.
I won’t lie and say I don’t down vote. But I don’t do it to censor the other person.
BTW, you’ve made some very good posts this thread. I like how most of the replies to you are along the lines of OMG YOU A HATER, without actually addressing your criticisms.
-
I don’t, It’s nice not to have to read every last piece of crazy that’s out there. It gets excessive after a while and makes you remember that most of the population is suffering from the DHUH.

Why is it that I always see angry athiests posting attacks on religion, but no religious types posting anti-athiest stuff? What are the athiests so angry about?

-
-
Did you see the pope saying that atheists are nazis? I guess you missed that, huh?
-
Ironic, since the Nazis were largely church-going Christians -
-
also just as ironic, the pope was a member of the hitler youth. pot calling the kettle…
-
-
-
Are you kidding me ?
Almost everyday the %85 accuse the less than %17 of trying to shove their Atheist views down their throats, it’s so laughable it’s sad…
-
-
As an Athiest myself i feel sorry for Bible bashers , i mean Burning bushes , loaves and fishes , rising from the Dead ADAM and EVE WTF people must thing we were born yesterday…..The Bible is a wonderfull Story but that is all it is a Freakin Story.
Some people are so dumb-
Christ dude, imagine being a christian and trying to explain to them why they shouldn’t take the bible as literal as they do.

-
-
The reason I call myself an agnostic is because if I call myself an atheist I will be aligning myself with a group that is predominantly formed of proselytizing cuntbags who in practice behave not so differently from their aggro-Christian counterparts.
-
bus you ARE a cunt, so do not be afraid.
-
It’s okay that you call yourself that; the rest of us understand that “agnostic” is just another word for “atheist without a spine”.
-
-
I don’t see how.
