Another possibility is one of our South American allies. Its not all that uncommon for them to use a mixture of US and East bloc weapons.

The problem with attacking the United States with conventional weapons is that we have a very long history of preparing for countering those attacks ie the cold war. Getting a nuke anywhere near this country is rather hard. Look at what happened to that poor Spanish freighter that had count them 6 tiles that had been used in the housing of a nuclear reactor being stopped by the US Coast Guard a 100 miles off the coast of the United States. They emanated less radiation then a bomb would. The Iranians don't have the ability to attack us head on as of yet so they fight a proxy war with us in Iraq. One that they are losing as of right now. Meeting with enemy leaders in unconditional talks gives them a sense of legitimateness that they don't need. It sends the wrong message to the Iranian people who don't really like their government all that much. It is far better to let them posture all they want but when it comes down to it to ignore them and show that they have no power. Perhaps then we would see regime change from within.

Tiki your right about how hard it would have been to take the Japanese home islands, the population had been armed with literally everything from firearms to bamboo spears and were quite literally ready to fight it out. The estimates of casualites predicted by American planners were to top over a million to successfully pacify the islands. Two atomic bombs later showed the Japanese military and government decided to surrender because they had no idea how many of those we had lying around. It was in essence the great bluff. @ Nemesis The war was far from over by June 6th 1944 the Russians and the Nazis were trading blows on the eastern front but in essence were stalemated. If German forces could have been brought to bear on the easternfront not having to worry about a Western or southern front things would have been diferent there. Germany enjoyed technological superiority on the battlefield against the Russians and while they didn't have the numbers or the resources that the Soviets had they did enjoy a lot of success in countering Russian Armor with innovative tactics. In short had we not invaded and opened up yet a third front for the Germans to worry about they may have fought the Russians to a standstill or regained the upperhand.
