I have to be honest, I’ve never really played pokemon, what did he end up doing? like he just popped out of his pokeball and wouldn’t fight?

I think that’s pretty much it (I was an adult by then, but I’ve dealt with more than a few pokemon obsessed kids). I think the running gag in the cartoon version was that Ash would summon him to fight, and he’d just take a nap unless something compelled it to do otherwise.
Of course, since if you think about the pokemon universe thoughtfully enough, it’s about going out and hunting animals, beating the crap out of them, imprisoning them in tiny prisons, and forcing them to fight each other in tournaments.
