Flashback Ronald Reagan’s powerful rebuke of hate groups

“If I were speaking to them instead of to you, I would say to them, ‘You are the ones who are out of step with our society. You are the ones who willfully violate the meaning of the dream that is America. And this country, because of what it stands for, will not stand for your conduct.’ My administration will vigorously investigate and prosecute those who, by violence or intimidation, would attempt to deny Americans their constitutional rights.”

Ronald Reagan would be called a RINO today. That’s how far the Republicans have shifted to the extreme right.

    tiki god

I agree, though his administration was just another step in that direction.

Please, the Left called Reagan a Nazi 40 years ago, 30 years , ago, 20 years ago, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Every once in a while they acknowledge that he did something good and wasn’t the monster they pretended he was.

Reagan was racist as fuck. He opposed the civil rights act and the voting rights act back in the day, and nattered on about “strapping young bucks and Cadillac welfare queens” during his presidency. Just because he had the good sense to call out hood wearing motherfuckers doesn’t mean he wasn’t a rotten, dog-whistling bastard. He courted the moral majority, for fucks sakes, and those motherfuckers wanted to ban interracial dating. In the 80s. Fuck him. He was a moronic and shitty president, in spite of the GOP canonizing him. If it wasn’t for Bush Jr. and now Trump, he’d be remembered by rational historians as one of the worst presidents ever.

sources?? the only thing I see is the bitburg visit that people called him out on

He opposed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, calling it “a bad piece of legislation.” A year later he came out against the Voting Rights Act, which he deemed “humiliating to the South.” During his 1966 California gubernatorial campaign, he defended the Golden State’s Proposition 14, which passed in 1964 and nullified the state’s fair housing law, effectively reinstating the right to discriminate in home sales and leases. “If an individual wants to discriminate against Negroes or others in selling or renting his house,” Reagan insisted, “it is his right to do so.” A Reagan campaign ad that same year referred to black neighborhoods as “jungles.”

Oh but that was in the 60s. He changed by the time he was president, right?

President Reagan, in another modification of his position on Federal tax exemptions for racially discriminatory private schools, said today that the Internal Revenue Service would withhold exemptions from such schools until Congress acted on the issue.

At the same time, the Administration proceeded with the reinstatement of tax-exempt status for the time being of two schools that practice discrimination, Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., and Goldsboro Christian Schools in Goldsboro, N.C.

    …wrong.

Reagan frequently elicited supportive outrage by criticizing the food stamp program as helping “some young fellow ahead of you to buy a T-bone steak” while “you were waiting in line to buy hamburger.” This was the toned-down version. When he first field-tested the message in the South, that “young fellow” was more particularly described as a “strapping young buck.” The epithet “buck” has long been used to conjure the threatening image of a physically powerful black man often one who defies white authority and who lusts for white women. When Reagan used the term “strapping young buck,” his whistle shifted dangerously toward the fully audible range. “Some young fellow” was less overtly racist and so carried less risk of censure, and worked just as well to provoke a sense of white victimization.
