    They’re English, not Irish.

They have their buttons grouped in fours and a shamrock on the collar: Irish Guards.

Whoever designed those hats was drunk when he did it.

Happens all the time on parade.
They teach you to flex your toes in your boots to prevent the blood from pooling in your legs and making you pass out.
But there’s always one guy who doesn’t listen…..

or the guy was on a piss up the night before. In the best tradition he appears to have thundered in while remaining (almost) at attention.
As for the bearskins the Danes have them too. Guardsmen have a minimum height requirement which when added to tall hats made them look near gigantic on the battlefields of yesteryear. Other regiments used tall Shakos or plumes to add height which was more popular with bears.
These guys often have to endure while on guard, young ladies exposing themselves in an attempt to elicit a reaction.

Considering that Guardsmen aren’t total wussies, why does that happen? Is it the weather or are they standing on attention for hours?
Does it also happen on “regular” guard duty in front of the palaces?

I wasn’t a Guardsman and am thus no authority, but agreed they aren’t “wussies”. The only place the Irish Guards aren’t allowed to serve is Northern Ireland (pretty sure), so one might infer they have done a few tough nature walks in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fairly certain they are inspected before guard mount for steadiness (sobriety, no illness etc) and uniform. Sometimes stuff happens.

Don’t know about the Guardsmen in particular…except that my parents said they saw one faint once when they were on holiday.
I think anyone with military experience has probably seen someone go down after being at attention for a while.
