It’s helpful to remember these were built with one specific purpose in mind: breaking the trench warfare stalemate by plowing straight through barbed wire-lined enemy trenches, a feat impossible to infantry since anyone’d turn into a bullet sponge by the time they ran up to the barbed wire, let alone have the time to cut/remove it. Note the wedge shape for ease of climbing up trenches and such.

This tanks wedge shape is great for trench crossing but strapping the treads to the tips like they are means the treads will be exposed to all direct and indirect fire.. The question is will the tank ever get to an enemy trench if its treads are severely damaged?

Severely damaged by what? WWI rifle fire? You have to put this machine into historical timeframe perspective. Artillery wasnt designed to shoot at mobile targets nearing their own positions quickly. It was meant to shoot at faraway trenches on the other side. Everything was trench-oriented back then. Trenchcoats. See? Everything.
