Which of Lori’s deaths did you think was better, the show or the comics?

    DaftGhosty

Comic for me. You didn’t see it coming. She had the baby, and Rick and her were mending their relationship, so you felt safe. Even when they were under attack you didn’t see it coming as she had the baby, and you just knew if anyone would get out of this it would be Rick Carl, Lori, and the baby. When I turned that page and saw that panel I actually stopped reading and got up. I didn’t come back for at least an hour to finish. I didn’t really care much for Lori in the comic, but the killing of the baby was the most shocking.

I remember reading all the hate mail in the back of the next few Walking Dead from people who said they were going to stop reading the book because of that scene. That right there tells you the difference between the comic and the tv show. People were cheering when Lori got it in the tv show, and people reading the comic for a large part were very shocked, and upset. People reading the comic, from what I’ve noticed are allot more connected to the characters, so when some of them die there is a very big impact as if it actually happened to a real friend. We had just lost Tyreese, so not many people saw this coming. Kirkman had been pretty cruel up to this point but in this one he hit his readers harder then they thought they could be hit. After this comic I don’t think anyone thought it could get any darker.. man were we wrong.

Yeah that is allot to say just to say the comic death was better. But it needed to be explained a little in depth. The comic is just more powerful and darker. The tv show is good in its own way, but here I am years after reading Lori, and the baby’s death and still feeling the impact. The tv death was safer, and afforded Lori a better and more honorable death. I don’t really feel anything about her death on tv. But that is because I read the comic. I’m sure people who have only seen the show loved it though.

I heard that they’re going to kill Rick in the comic as well. Kirkman said that with all the shit Rick has gone through, it’s very “unrealistic” if he’s still alive.

    DaftGhosty

At this point there is no telling. Kirkman has said just that a few times, and he has said that while it seems we are following only Rick’s point of view, that it could change at any point, and Rick could die.

I can tell you if there is a point in which he could die, it is definitely right now in the comic. It is pretty bleak, but there is that faint hope you get because when Rick puts his mind to something he normally wins, sometimes with horrible outcomes. And this mind be when Kirkman pulls a one two punch, because he just killed a couple of long time characters only a few issues ago, and he seems to like to do them in twos and threes.

It sounded from your post above this one that you had read the comics too, but enjoy both mediums. I myself while I enjoy the tv show, it is not in the same way as I enjoyed the comic. See I’m one of those people who if they read something that is really good, and then watches a movie, or tv show that is based on that work, that deviates from the source material for the expressed reason just to be different, then I have a harder time liking the show or movie. It’s just how the logic of it all works for me. I feel if the source material was good enough to cross mediums then there was something to the original story people loved, so why change it just for the sake of offering a new story that shares only the characters and material’s name, at the same time risking alienating fans of the original source material, and even the new watchers. Just build an original work. I know why they the studios do it this way. They want name recognition, but want a different story so those who read the original have something new to watch and not be board by the story they already know. But again I am one of those people who want to see the story I know acted out the same, in a new medium. Not everyone is like this, but that’s just how I am =)

As for why you loved Lori’s death is why I didn’t like it at all. See I’m watching the show for the most part for its own merits, and the Lori in the show didn’t deserve such a good death IMO. The Lori in the comic on the other hand did deserve a better death, and that is why her death in the comic was so moving for me. Like the real world many people die everyday who deserve a better death, and the Kirkman of the comic fame has been great at conveying that in the comic. Her death in the comic was so pitiful, and quick among all the chaos, and there was so much hope for her and Rick, so much unresolved issues. And then there was no chance for either of them to enjoy that hope.

Lori’s character change wasn’t the one that upset me the most though. It’s been Andrea. They have destroyed her character from the comic. In the comic she is a strong character, and likable. I can not stand her in the show. She went from a smart, and important part of the story, in the comic, to a ignorant liability in the tv show. Her relationship with Dale in the comic was a very important character building for her, while in the show the relationship with Shane just compounded how stupid they had made her character for the show.

Man I could just keep on going with the contrast of the comic, and show, but this would be a book. So I am going to stop. =)

I absolutely see your side of Lori as well. There are a are a few shows I can relate the character how you relate the walking dead characters. Game of Thrones is one of them. In that show just like with you I feel the book enhances the tv shows character without detriment to either.

I also agree 100% on your assessment of Dale and Andrea in the show. They had a chance to make her more then a dumb blonde with no personality. You also bring up a good point about the governor. Since the Tyrese we know and love in the comic isn’t with Ricks group.. You know the govenor needs some one to behead in front of the prison. What better a person the Andrea. I love to imagine now you created the spark. A scene where Andrea goes with the govenor to help talk Rick into letting the govenor into the prison because she thinks it’s the right thing to do, but when Rick says no the govenor forces a confused Andrea to her knees. Maybe he has Michoone’s katana like in the comics and gives Rick the same threat as he did in the comic except this time Andrea will be the one with the head rolling hehe.

Also on a different character. Do you feel the way I do about Daryl? I feel he is almost a shadow of rick from the comics. Because in the show while he is finally getting close to how he was in the comic in the early days, Daryl has been that no crying get up and do shit that Rick always was in the comic that he isn’t in the tv show.

I had the same problem so I just replied to my own post to keep it under this thread hehe but ill drop you a mail too.

    demon

didn’t read the comic, cried when Rick started wailing at the end of the show.

    Luminary

    Um… who?

    Luke Magnifico

I think the lead-up to Lori’s death in the show made it better. Rick’s going to feel pretty lousy about being such a passive-aggressive shit after Lori saved Hershel.

    RalphTheDog

Rick finding a zombie with a nice full belly where Lori’s body should have been – that was pretty awesome. Cutting him open to take Lori back was even better.

    DaftGhosty

Yeah that was a very jaws like moment. I was getting ready to see parts of Lori spill onto the floor. Personally I was hoping Carl hadn’t shot her and Rick would have found her as a zombie. Though her being totally eaten was a nice touch. But there really should have been a few parts of her left hehe.

    RalphTheDog

I hoped he was going to take all the slop out on the floor and try to reassemble her in his madness.

the phone! i squeeled like a little girl when the phone rang. i fucking LOVED the months that rick spent talking to lori on the phone. so creepy and totally human at the same time.

    DaftGhosty

Hell he is still talking to her as only a few comics ago haha the man seems nuts but he knows she isn’t there so I don’t know what that makes him but the man sure as hell isn’t Santa clause hah
