You know, if the common black rat hunted this thing to near extinction then one way to “save” it comes to mind. Until they can convince the islanders that they would rather have these guys as guests than rats perhaps they ought commercialize this critter. I can think of lots of people who collect exotic bugs as pets. If the common rat can wipe it out it would be pretty safe to have anywhere that has rats and is warm enough; it is not about to become an invasive species pretty much anywhere on the planet.
