actually, they didn’t start calling it canola until the mid-1970s… before that, it was rapeseed oil all the way.

they call it canola because americans are too puritanical to use something called rapeseed.

well, it isn’t so strange that it is called rape in a non English-speaking environment, as the word has no sexual connotation at all. In Sweden for instance, people have no idea what Canola is.
