Oh, it’s real, alright. Helium is lighter than air, thus your voice is higher. this gas is heavier than air, thus your voice is deeper.

The uncomfortable chuckle at “Is this dangerous?” says it all. It’s heavier than air, so it doesn’t get displaced by inhaling. They probably had to stand on their heads after the show to get the stuff out of their lungs.
