    now I get them all the time without the drugs, there are benefits to getting older,

    Those are distortions in the viscous fluid that fills the eyeball, cells that have sloughed off the inner eyeball membrane, or – more commonly – bacteria inside the eyeball fluid.

    If memory serves, they are the remnants of the microscopic veins that used to be in eye, they break apart, but never fully dissolve.
