“The only authenticated photograph, the famous Upham tintype, of Billy the Kid (aka William Bonney and William Henry McCarty) up for auction at Brian Lebel’s 22nd Annual Old West Show & Auction in the Denver Merchandise Mart in Denver, Colorado June 25, 2011. The 130-year-old tintype photograph is considered the most recognizable photo of Billy the Kid in existence. It was estimated to sell for between $300,000 and $400,000, but it ended up going for $2.3 million.”

  2. That’s one unfortunate hat. Now that I think about it, though: so is most cowboy hats.

  3. He looks more white trash than redneck or cowboy to me.

    • Fashions back then were weird, and from everywhere. When somebody went to the trouble to get their image taken- they dressed as fancy as they could. So, even though he does kind of look like a hobo- he was dressed to the nines. I imagine if it were in color, we’d get a better idea how fancy he was. Chicks really dug him- and he was a real popular guy.
