What exactly makes it NOT a tank?
An enclosed, heavily armored combat vehicle that is armed with cannon and machine guns and moves on continuous tracks.

Howitzers fire slower rounds at high elevations for greater range, while tanks shoot very high speed rounds in direct fire rolls. Modern howitzers usually have much larger and longer barrels than tanks since accuracy at range is critical. Also the ammunition is very different between the two types of ordnance.
