More Star Trek bullshit right here… if the damned visor was so great, why weren’t people lining up to get them? If it wasn’t as good as Mk 1 eyeballs, why didn’t he get his eyes fixed earlier?

It’s not that great. It causes him constant headaches because the human brain isn’t designed to handle that much info. He keeps it because it lets him do his job MUCH better. Being able to see radiation leaks, metal fatigue, particle emission, etc is very useful for a starship engineer.
