Virgin births of gods had been going on for 3,000 years before Jesus was born. I wish people would actually research their religions before blindly submitting to them.

Makes for a more imaginative tale, but in the end, having Jesus born of a virgin completely negates his claim as the messiah prophesied in the Old Testament. The messiah will be 1) a great warrior 2) born in Bethlehem 3) from the line of King David. Jesus was a pacifist born in Nathareth, and although the Gospels tie him to King David (with varying numbers in generations), they do so through Joseph, with whom Jesus shares no lineage at all.

I think the point is not to impress the world that Jesus was born of a virgin, as much as the irony, or the counterintuitive nature of the gospel, that the savior of the world was born in the eyes of the world an illegitimate child, raised by peasant parents, from a Podunk town (“can anything good come out of Nazareth), with a nothing job…tekton in Greek doesn’t mean carpenter, it is more a handyman, an unskilled laborer.
