The ninja’s black outfit is a creation of early manga artists, but damn it looks cool.

Ninjas rarely used that black outfit. And when they did it wasn’t black. Black stands out, even in the darkness. Ninja’s would have used colors like dark blue.
But most often than not, a ninja would simply don the disguise of a servant (depending on the assignment, that is)
