Other way around, Shelby Cobra. But yeah, such a pretty thing. Can’t look away.

I saw one of these stop by the light rail entrance once. The driver got out and checked something under the hood.

Don’t these come in kits that you can put together?

What’s the appeal of them if that’s true?

I could see if it was a production car, it would be rare to still be in this condition.

    LRichardson

They were originally a (limited) production car. A real, original one is worth a whole smackload of cash. A few years ago an 800 horsepower one sold for 5.5 million US$. They imported the chassis’ and built the rest of the car in the US out of Ford performance parts in the 60’s. A few thousand in total were made.

As per the component car versions people still make it is sortof the same thing but without the history. People buy the chassis without anything in it and build the rest of the car from mostly Ford performance parts. All the stuff you need to build it can be had for about $20,000…

    Some assembly required.

    outlanderssc

They sell fake Rolexes for $20 on Canal Street in New York. The real ones still sell pretty well, too –

Even a good copy is still a copy.

    casemods UID# 667

    That’s not an accurate comparison.

That’s implying that the cobra kits use cheap chinese parts and are less reliable.

In this case, the cars are EXACTLY the same, the only difference being the time they were made, for the most part.

    LRichardson

Indeed, arguably a well made recently built Cobra can be better than the original in that some technologies have improved since then. Really though, it is the same car.

The originals are simply that though, original and worked on by Caroll Shelby himself. They are quite rare, less than a thousand remain I just found out.

I keep pondering getting one though (of the continuation / component cars, not the original). A used one in excellent condition can be found for 40 to 60 k. A pricey toy car, but not uberexotic.

If the parts are only $20,000 to build it, I would much rather do that.

You can make things EXACTLY the way you want it (wiring for example, if you are into car audio like I am)

    LRichardson

Yea, thats the pipe dream, but between time, tools and talent I would probably end up with a better car if I went the turnkey route. You really are building -the whole car-. It’s a lot of drilling, welding, fabricating, painting, upholstering, ect. It doesn’t just bolt together. I’m just not convinced I would do it right… Maybe once I have put more wrench time in on my current toy.

It’s still one of the fastest, most nimble cars on the market. The mass appeal of them are that it is an extremely light-weight chassis with a ridiculously large engine. Shelby widened the track width to deal with the extra speeds they were pulling in the tiny British-car-based chassis, and upgraded the suspension. With the original drive-train it goes from 0 mph to 100 mph and back to 0 mph in 13 seconds, and can pull incredible numbers on the skidpad. This car was extremely popular when baby-boomers were young, so the desire to own one when they got older and had a little extra coin to spend resulted in a large “kit car” industry. Factory Five makes the most well-known kits, and will even build it for you to your specifications at an incredibly great cost. If you have some mechanical skill and autobody experience it can be built for much cheaper.

Please forgive any inaccuracies all of these numbers were quoted from memory, and I may be a little rusty.

    Wow that’s awesome!

My dad said they put 454’s in there or something?

    LRichardson

This is going to be a real hand-staple-forehead moment for you… It was a FE 427 side oiler. 427 as in the name of the car / post. That was the most common engine for it. This in a car that is a whole lot lighter than my MX-5.

    casemods UID# 667

Well we aren’t really car guys, so I give him some credit for being pretty close 😉

    casemods UID# 667

Oh I thought it was an easy snap in project or something.

    What is your current project?

    LRichardson

Nothing too fancy, a 2002 Miata SE in blaze metallic yellow with chrome trim. So far I have just worked on the suspension some, brakes, new wheels, added a roll bar and put in some significant structural improvements to the chassis. I had a lighter flywheel and a ceramic clutch put in professionally. This spring / summer / fall I am hopefully going to be adding a Rotrex supercharger, putting a better radiator in, throwing in a 3″ exhaust system and building an intercooler setup. Maybe I will also invest in a good set of Koni coilovers.

    casemods UID# 667

Don’t get me wrong, but isn’t that more of just adding things than a “project” ?

I thought a project was when you buy a non-working vehicle and get it working, or highty modify it in some way (mini trucks, for example, by getting a frame that can lay on the ground, or custom airbag placement)

I don’t mean to sound like I’m belittling it or what you are doing to it. But it sounds like you are just adding things/making it a rice rocket :\

Got any pics of it, though? Or a cardomain page?

    LRichardson

Yea, I would certainly not call it a project car either. Your word, not mine. I just called it my toy. ; )

You are totally right, I am simply adding performance items for SCCA autocrossing. I’m hoping to go Solo II and Solo I this summer between bits. Thats the reason for the roll bar, they wont let you compete in Solo I without one.

I do have pics, though they are nothing spectacular. You know, I have lurked this site for years and I suppose this is as good a reason as any to actually post something…

    casemods UID# 667

    You are right…heh

Anyways, it’s always nice to see some OC around here and not just things people found online.

Can’t wait to see them if you do post em!

    casemods UID# 667

Also, just about anything you think is worth taking a picture of and posting is pretty much welcome by tiki.

That’s probably why so many of my pictures get published, because it’s interesting to see and it’s also OC.

    casemods UID# 667

    Yeah 😉

    already suggested in the forums

    LRichardson

I’ve posted it, so it ought come up soon. The pics were taken 2 weeks ago.

    casemods UID# 667

    Alright cool.

Maybe we can convince tiki to do a vehicle theme day 😀

    LRichardson

    “Post my ride” day?

    storminator

If it isn’t made by SHELBY AMERICAN- then it’s fake. And if you drive a fake Shelby, then you are a douchebag.

    LRichardson

You know that the body design wasn’t designed, manufactured or owned by Shelby, right? Shelby did not design, manufacture or own the automotive components in the car either. A Cobra made by someone else is still a Cobra, it is just not a Shelby Cobra. Mechanically what makes an authentic Shelby Cobra “real” is the MKIII chassis design. If the chassis doesn’t use that design then it isn’t even trying to be a Shelby Cobra since it steals absolutely nothing that Shelby made.

That said, a lot of the knock offs are …. poor. There are also some that are arguably better than the original.
