Bin Laden was not “bat shit crazy”. He was a smart guy who had a lot of good points about how screwed up US involvement in the Middle East has been. Dismissing our enemies as being stupid or crazy is immature and unproductive.

  In this picture he doesn’t look as batshit nuts because he’s not crying over losing a multi billion dollar military contract. He’s still thinking ‘well the Saudis still owe my people big time for getting them Arabia so its all good’.

  He was fighting the communists in Afghanistan, but he was not our ally. He did not fight for the Taliban (our allies), he was the paymaster for an independent group of (primarily) Arabs fighting alongside the Taliban and other mujaheddin groups in Afghanistan. Or are you saying that the principle of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” is true in all cases?

    “fighting alongside” sounds like a key part of being an ally. Why are conservatives always trying to rewrite history. Next you’ll be telling me that Saddam Hussien wasn’t supported by the US or that Reagan didn’t sell weapons to Iran.

      A large hodgepodge of mujaheddin fought against the Soviets. Not all had actual relations with the CIA, but all fought against the Soviets for various reasons. The fact that all had a common enemy does not mean all were allied.

    Not in all cases, but I’m pretty sure that during the Cold War, America would have sent weapons, money and advisors to Satan, if Hell was fighting the Communists.
