NOT complete fail. I agree that age does not (alone) bring respect. There are a lot of people older than me that I hold no (or even negative) respect for. However, just begging on the street does NOT mean she deserves such treatment.

Somewhere in between IMO… the amount of smack heads (dunno if you US guys call them that, heroin addicts..) begging in the city I work (UK) after/before work is mad – all smack heads, every one I speak to has experienced them throwing food back, literally throwing it on the floor infront of you, because they want £1 coins minimum.
So yea, I guess its prejudice to assume every homeless person is a heroin addict, but theres a MASSIVE percentage of them that are, not only heroin addicts, but fucked ones… rude as fuck ones. So they can get all the shit they get…

You can’t compare crackhead beggars in the US to the poor in other countries. Shit happens in 3rd world countries that your pampered ass wouldn’t believe. Whole villages get wiped out be mudslides. Guys from some army you haven’t even heard of burn people’s farms. A mine dumps toxic waste in the river and kills off all the fish. Anyone one of those could put an old lady on the street, through no fault of her own.

What you say is true, but even if they are addicts (and rude) chances are they have non-medicated mental/psychiatric issues. How many years ago was it that many states just emptied out their mental hospitals and dropped these guys on the street, totally unable to care for themselves? Self-medicating psychiatric problems is an easy way to end up a pathetic drug addict. I didn’t see it much teaching at college, but at the high school level? I have to admit, I was shocked. It’s a big problem…in WV anyway.

i used to work waiting tables at Joe’s Crab Shack in DFW. there is this overpass near it, and most days there would be this panhandler at the light. i remember her because she had dark hair, with a large white shock of hair. it was very distinctive. she looked to be about 35-40 ish.
anyways, one day i look up and she was in my section with a couple of friends. when it came time to pay the bill, that bitch pulled out a srs gangster roll of cash. i totally shit brix

On average I believe serious pan-handlers and beggars make anywhere from 15-20k a year in the US from what I last read.

In a way, I make fun of beggars and crazy people on the street, but I keep it to myself or the person next to me, I don’t go cause them grief, and some of them I even get along with.
Then there are other smart-asses and assholes that deserve to be in the situation they are in, and I would continue to make fun of them if they were to drop dead in front of me.
It’s hard to tell which of those two groups this old lady would fall into, maybe she has an authentic tragic story, or maybe she just lacked common sense, but all I’m trying to say is that I hope she did something to deserve that middle finger from the little girl, otherwise I’d make her shove it up her ass so she can return home undignified to her strict parents that will disown her for having a bloody asshole and a shit-stain finger.
