It’s spine protection. This is a motorcycling protection suit. Not so sure how effective it would be at freeway speeds, but definitely keep you less banged up in a 30-40 mph crash.

Why not either give the guy a shirt to wear under the jacket, or put him in pants with a little higher waistband in the front?

What’s up with that, other than crouched forward while riding it’s covered, sometime you have to stand up and that looks stupid.

This is meant to be worn underneath a leather jacket. The jacket provides abrasion resistance, and the hard plastic and foam cushioning of the armor protects against impacts.
the mesh is merely to hold the separate pieces together.
