Well you learn something new everyday. If people would think before they join the military this might be avoided, the money and them paying for college has its downsides. But my sister-in-law is in the army been over seas 2 times.
Alot of the suicides is relationship related.

Honestly how many of us would know if we could handle it before hand? I have no idea how I’d react and I only know of one person here (at MCS) who I know has been to war since he posted the photos of his injuries.

Many of the sign-ups are young, unemployed and under-educated. They think they know what they’re getting into, but they don’t, not really. Since the end of the draft, joining the military has been a really good way for people to get xp and money for college, w/o which college would be impossible. Hubby’s service got him a free college education and allowed us to buy our house. Technically he was part of the Vietnam era, though he saw no action. The closest he came was when he was sent to Turkey during the Iran hostage incident. He was responsible for for fixing the fighter jets, so it was doubtful that he would have seen any real action anyway.

To credit our military instructors, many of them are experienced and extremely knowledgeable. They pass on what they know but in the end its like any solid battle plan, worthless. Everything goes right up until the first bullet is fired and the IED’s light up your world.
There are processes in place for those who sign up for combat MOS’ to endure very rigorous physical and psychological training to even pass or remain in many of the MOS’. Up’s and downs to this and I could argue all day left and right but I’z tired.

The overall US suicide rate is 11 out of 100,000 per year. The US military has about 3 million active and reserve personal, so 300 suicides per year is perfectly normal compared to the civilian population.

If the USAF rate is 12.5 and the overall US rate is 11.1, that’s not that big of a difference. Also account for gender bias: the suicide rate for men is 17.7 per 100,000. So if we assume that military is still mostly men, then its actually much lower than the civilian suicide rate.

Back to the point of the thread, though: There’s been various experiments that show that people will act in horrible ways that they normally would never do, a few of these things is that when you’re under authority (or in a group), if you’re in uniform (or wearing a mask), or when you’ve bought into the dehumanization of the opposition (Scientologists is a good example of this).
tl;dr: almost anyone can act like the nazis did during WW2 under the right conditions. Yes, probably you too.
