That’s not the long count calendar. That’s the Tun, or yearly calendar. The long count was inscribed on tablets or walls.

    NERD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are correct, but I still love the above image.

You should visit Tenochtitlan. It’s beautiful.

2012.My ass. They had no idea about metallurgy(forget gold). They knew not the wheel.Counting was primitive. No phonetic representation. They had a very low order of astronomy. And please don`t compare their blood thirst to contemporary Western standards of behavior.Pre Columbian “civilization” was primitive and barbaric by Western and far Eastern standards at best.Hell, the Chinese were far ahead on us.

    RSIxidor

Huh? Their method of counting was fairly well advanced considering the rest of their civilization, even if it was ‘primitive’ as you say.

The rest of that … I have no idea what you trying to say.

2012.Much has been made of this. The world is not going to end on this date.Metallurgy:they hammered raw gold.
But did not develop bronze or iron technology. They had the lama as transport, not the wheel. They had nothing even resembling(you will defer on this) advanced mathematics(think what China had, more thoughtful than the west at this period).Astronomy for pre columbian civilizations has always been exaggerated.Much of what has been said is pure speculation. They were very limited in comparison to both they West and East. They never even figured out mortar. They did have an affinity for fitted stone.Research this at length.

Sorry, the first post just seemed a little scattered. No worries. I have always agreed with your point on how little 2012 is important, it is really just the end of an era on the Mayan calendar. The reason people first thought it was meaningful was because according to Mayan traditions (or our interpretation of it at least) at the beginning of the current era there was a catastrophic event, so perhaps there is always a catastrophic event when that happens. But that is just silly, because the calendar actually points to a time before the Mayan civilization was really a civilization for the beginning of that era. I hope I got all that correct, it has been a while since I have studied that.

As for how any of that other stuff is relevant … how is it relevant? So what if their civilization was not advanced as some other civilization, that does not mean their dates have no importance, but as you see above, I agree that 2012 is likely nothing.

As for their math, yes, compared to the Chinese at the same time they were not as advanced. But the argument has never been that their math was advanced. Their timekeeping is very advanced, more accurate than the calendar most of the world uses now. And for their overall level of their civilization, their math was fairly advanced, as was their architecture. Comparing them to a civilization that was already more advanced is just silly.

    natedog

Their calendar is a wheel. Your argument is invalid

    hufnmouth

You are incorrect. They Mayans had wheels. However, the wheels were ceremonial, instructional, or used for playthings. The wheels were not used as a part of material or human locomotion.

    nyoki

Where would they have used a wheel, not a good landscape for wheeled vehicles?

    conan776

    But the aliens!

    sleepyjoe256

Hey, can use put a space after your periods? It’s buggin the hell outa me.

hell, if it aint gonna happen, i’ll make it happen.

    limpgod

We all will….this is one big ass self-fulfilling prophecy in the making.

The Aztecs made this Sun Stone, centuries after the collapse of the Mayan city states. Saying this is Mayan is like saying Notre Dame is English.

    RSIxidor

Everything on the Internet is wrong, then, because I see it attributed to both Mayans and Aztecs. How confusing.

    Carnito

Go to el Museo Nacional de Antropologia in Mexico City, it’s there, they’ll show you. The Aztecs carved this Sun Stone.
