I’ve got a few ideas how this could be going…
What did you do? Pour sugar, juice and yeast into the melon, pop in the airlock?

Champagne yeast is a good, all-purpose fermenting yeast. I would just drill a hole, add champagne yeast and some sugar water to get it started, then cap it with the fermentation lock, as shown.
