Every spring here in Albuquerque the bosque catches fire a couple times. Some years are worse than others. At this point the actual property damage tends to be fairly low. The fire department has gotten rather good at dealing with it. That said, more than once has Albuquerque lay hidden under the pall of smoke from the river, very much like the third picture in this thread. Only our river isn’t nearly that nice.
I can only hope the actual property damage and loss of life is at a minimum in Russia.

Very sad. 1/3 of Russia’s wheat is gone and the drought still continues. The US and other counties have sent firefighting supplies. I’ve read that the fire has spread to radiative zones from the Chernobyl disaster and areas where Russia use to construct nuclear bombs.

If that’s spreading to Chernobyl, all of the radiation that has been bound up in the plant-life will be spreading with the smoke, thus spreading the radiation contamination. Yeah, not a good thing.

Apparently this and the floods in Pakistan are caused by a static jet stream that’s keeping extreme weather sat over one area for ages.
