A ‘teratoma’, derived from the Greek word for ‘monster’, is a type of tumor that can grow teeth & hair as pictured above. These can grow anywhere in your body. Eww.

Neat.

Hey this sounds like that rare thing that happens to people who were supposed to have a twin but it never grew properly in the womb so the twin who does grow ends up having this pocket at the end of their spine I think with stuff in it that was supposed to be for the other twin, like teeth and whatnot.

No, no, I think this is just a really fucked up tumor, because those pseudo-twins are not usually described as tumors.

…except in Hellboy II.

That movie doesn’t exist, you’re making shit up.

Hellboy 2,The Golden Army.It was lousy.

Just like Transformers 2. These movies were never made. And I’ll continue to tell myself so I don’t worry about those hours of my life that I’ll never get back.

There’s also a case in which a baby foot was growing within the brain of a patient, apparently a “lost limb” from an unformed little brother/sister.

This is just a tumor, it can happen in men and women. Most tumor cells take a step backward in their evolution, and so retain some of their original character, whereas these cells start at the very beginning, and can take on the character of any cell type. It develops because it’s derived from primitive cells, but there is no plan to it.

According to wiki, there is a theory that says foetus in foetu may be a highly developed teratoma.

Where’s Fracked, he would prolly know?
August 10, 2010 at 9:38 pm
That’s a correct statement, but that wiki article seems faulty to me.
It blends together the two theories in the second paragraph implying that a parasitic twin can be a teratoma. I would say a teratoma, being a tumor, is derived from a single cell with a genetic fault. A parasitic twin is an undeveloped organism, with a developmental fault.

Jonas Venture Junior!
PS. Teratoma’s not the best thing to Google after you’ve eaten.

Considering how many complex chemical reactions our bodies are doing all the time, in ever changing conditions and all the shit we put them through, it utterly amazes me that we don’t have more random tumors with teeth growing out of us time.

Random things may grow over time, as did your sentence.
August 9, 2010 at 11:34 am
Proof we could easily grow our own replacement parts.

This is what they try to do using stem cells, maybe one day in the future.
