    I had a bottle of coke poured in my laptop, followed by a chocolate digestive inserted into the family computer’s disk drive.
    All in the space of a week! Needless to say my brother will not be advancing past the abacus until he’s 18.

    The remotes that came with my home theatre system and cable TV have buttons for features that didn’t exist 5 years ago (DVR, Pay-per-view, HD options, etc.), let alone 40. Most of the buttons are labelled with non-standard abbreviations, the layout has little to do with functionality or frequency of use. Its terrible by any measure.
    Look, maybe I’m just getting old, but remotes are one of the things that piss me off on a regular basis. If I want to watch a pay-per-view movie, for example, I need to turn on the TV and adjust the screen ratio with one remote, order the movie with another remote and control the sound system volume and balance with a 3rd remote. I have yet to find a universal remote that has all 3 of those functions.
    Someone should make a remote with a smartphone-like interface: touch screen with abbreviations, context sensitive controls, easy plugins for additional functionality.

    OMFG AND THE WORST PART IS THAT THE TV/DVD PLAYER ONLY HAVE LIKE 1/10th OF THE BUTTONS THE REMOTE HAS, SO IF YOU LOSE YOUR REMOTE, YOU LOSE ALL THE FUNCTIONS EXCEPT CHANNEL/VOLUME UP OR DOWN AND THE POWER BUTTON

    same with my media player – I proudly pulled out my media player when we rented an appartment, plugged it in, announced I had some southpark to get stoned to after a club – and realised no fooking remote! skills… just needs a D pad and select/back!

    My remote ran out of batteries, now I have to get up to turn it on/off, change channel and it is old as hell.

    Only four of those devices even come close to what I’m describing. The two of them that come closest weigh over 2 pounds and cost over $280.
    What I’m describing is basically just an iPod Touch with an IR interface and custom apps for each component system. Since an iPod Touch starts at $199 and weighs 4 ounces, anything more than that is overpriced and overweight.

    yeah, you have a point, but grandma has only to turn things on or off, adjust volume and change program.

    for what you say there is a remote by logitech wich can control all the devices you have, but it costs and you have to *program* it, sooooo…

    Oh yeah. I need the tv remote, dolby remote and dvd remote to watch a dvd and I need all 3 throughout the movie. PPV and OnDemand is only one remote. Thankfully, I no longer have the vcr hooked up.
