Googling this brings you to Jefferson’s Letter to Peter Carr, which is an interesting read, and actually expresses a great tolerance and admiration for something that could very well be an intricate fairy tale. But it’s not nearly the indictment on religion that the out of context quote makes it out to be.
Seems to me, that people who are secure in their belief that there is no God and that religion is hokum, shouldn’t be so threatened and scared of it.
So, reason #854 why, despite my lack of a belief in God, I refuse to identify myself with these types of people

Um, what indictment is there in this quote? It only says that people should question even their most ingrained beliefs. I’m friends with Dan Barker at the FRFF, and he is certainly not hostile to religion, only its corrosive nature.
