    Looks like an Iowa class battleship, but I believe one of the Iowa’s turrets are non-functioning after it blew itself up. Could be pre-explosion though.

    Unfortunately that is true. Took to many people to operate and is very expensive to put to sea. If they put a couple of reactors on this class of ship it may be feasible again, but then the question would be “what the hell would they be used for?” Seeing as we don’t utilize our nuclear arsenal for anything other than a deterrent it may be a good idea to put these huge floating gun platforms back to sea. It’s much better than having troops on the ground and a 16″ shell does not discriminate. Also, if they can refit an Ohio class to carry tomahawks they can put packs of those awesome toys on a battle ship too.

    It’s not a boat, it’s a ship (by any of the bajillion definitions of it)… Ocean-going? Check. Carries boats? Check. Cannot be carried by any other ship? Check. Capable of sustained independent operations? Checkity-check.

    And yes, it’s an Iowa (pre-mothballing, probably – which would make this picture older than the WWW).

    From the US Navy Slang Glossary on Wikipedia:
    Boat: Water craft small enough to be carried on a ship, unless a submarine, which is ALWAYS called a boat. A ship may be called a boat but ONLY by members of its crew, and only those who have actually completed a deployment.

    The moral of the story is that the definition is too fukked up to argue about. Seriously people it’s 2010, I thought arguing on the internet would have died out by now.

    I was deployed on the Minnow…With The Skipper, The Professor (he’s sexy) and Mary Anne…It was a three hour cruise…A three hour cruise!

    I wasn’t arguing in so much as being amazed at how rabid someone may become because I misused a word.

    I own a canoe. I think from now on to be sure I will call it a hovercraft.

    My canoe is named the HMCS Tom Thompson…Which is funny…In a uniquely Canadian way.
