There’s a rail there. It’s shown more clearly in the inset picture. Mind you, this was before the time of the nanny-state so a simple rail would do what a wall does today.

I had one of these as a kid.
Only mine was a cardboard box I found in the trash put up on the kitchen table when mom was passed out drunk and dad was in jail…I did all like “Pew! Pew!” and my brother was a Wookie named Shut-the-fuck-up-you-are-a-Wookie-there-can-only-be-one-Han-Solo!
