Yeah i can’t imagine that guy is helping advance the public image of the philosophy. Most of the atheists i meet in real life are usually able to make their point without coming off as acerbic or snide. The internet seems to be a magnet for all the assholes in the movement.

I haven’t watched any of AA’s videos, but it takes all kinds. And considering the Falwells, Warrens, Phelps, etcs, how important is it that all the public faces are well mannered and pretty? We have our friendly Hemant Mehtas and our fire breathing PZs and Matt Dillahuntys.
When atheists are approached by theists online and often in person, the theists often lie about having been an atheist at some point. The theist then uses arguments for faith that most of us that have that have thought of long and hard about religion have rejected. When we respond that their claims aren’t impressive or ask for more, the theist gets mad. We are, after all, an attack on what they believe is their very reason for existing.
No matter how we approach society, we are attacked as snide and acerbic in the media and from the pulpit, and because of this, most atheists feel that they can’t be open about their atheism in public. The dumbest, yet most common, attack is that we hate god for being mean and having a bunch of rules we don’t like. The internet is a safe haven, and you can probably understand why those atheists feel the need to act out in the one place they feel safe.
But then, the internet does attract assholes and people with no social skills, so it is to be expected.

Hemant Mehtas. I read his site fairly regularly (in fact todays post about the five year old was fucking gold). He is a very well spoken man.
The Veil of anonymity that the internet offers also allows otherwise levelheaded Atheists (and this applies to theists as well) to exercise their streaks of Extremism as well. I grew up in a predominantly white upscale neighborhood in new jersey (though we had a LOT of Indian and Korean buisnessmen and their families which resulted). In public these people would come off as the most racially tolerant people on the face of the earth. But behind closed doors they would become indistinguishable from the most hardcore klansmen. The internet gives people an opportunity to voice their opinions without real world repercussions. Plus there is a thrill to be found in violently shouting out against the status qu
Still it is rather sad that some of our atheist friends have to be afraid of voicing their opinions in the real world. I find it detestable that atheist Billboards have been vandalized and how officials within the US government (which MUST remain secular if we want to have the freedom to be religious or irreligious)have reacted towards various atheist groups. As a theist i am truly sorry that some of you feel that way. And in a way i can relate having faced the scorn of members of other faiths.
I’ve found that the best conversations i have had with atheists generally leave me questioning my beliefs or pondering on a point that they have brought up and usually end up with some form of mutual agreement.
I think the best course of action would be for both sides to humble the fuck up and realize that we just do not have all the answers no matter how strong our Faith, philosophy or Science is. I guess that is why over the years i’ve taken to calling my stance agnostic-theism.Despite my faith i can not truly know if it is correct. I guess you could say i am skeptical of my own conclusions.
