It’s always a little ironic when an employer is afraid of his employee.

    bejamus

    Ironic like Alanis Morrissette maybe….

    dieAntagonista

Nah, the common usage of this term allows me to use it this way and mostly everybody understands what I mean. Just like I understood your non-sentence because it’s common to talk this way.

    DMYTRIW WDS

I can has single payer system?

    pabloterro

many thanks to Scott Brown and the many people in the great state of Massachusetts… left wing is walking with a limp now 😀

    The Matrix: Rebooted

The first year of Obama’s administration has proven that there is no left-wing in the US. There is only right-wing and crazy right-wing.

    Kishi

Forget left wing or right wing. It’s just different flavors of extremist, batshit crazy.

    The Matrix: Rebooted

Socialized is the norm for industrialized nations, outside of the US. If its the norm, then it can’t be extreme. QED.

    Kishi

I’m not talking about policies. I’m talking about the attitudes people in this country take towards politics and our political parties.

    nyoki

You missed the point. Same flavor, different intensity. We don’t have any other flavors anymore, not in our current gov’t. There are so few progressives and true-leftists that they may as well not exist.

    suicydking

Yeah, keep your government hands off my liberal socialist single-payer health insurance that was put into effect by a Democrat and comes from the…government?

Or else I’ll wave my flag & shoot my gun.

    Just This Guy, You Know?

THIS IS WHAT RIGHT-WING NUTJOBS ACTUALLY BELIEVE.

    figosound

    Private Medicare = Richard Nixon
    am I right or what?

    WistfulD

    Not exactly, no.

    agrey

    Isn’t Medicare a government program?

    lolfail

    nyoki

    Way to keep up.

    Kamakiri

Do you even have a healthcare?

    WistfulD

Yes Kamakiri, we do have health care. Not “The best healthcare in the world,” but the most expensive in the world. Yet the return we get on that expenditure puts us at the bottom of the industrialized world in terms of health outcomes.

What bugs me is that 46% of healthcare expenditures in America are ALREADY publicly financed, be it Medicare, Medicaid, MCHO, CHIP, VA, Armed Forces, Indian Healthcare, Free clinics. And that doesn’t count the increased insurance premiums we pay so that hospitals can provide ER and urgent care to people unable to pay for it.

Healthcare spending is growing at twice the overall rate of inflation. It currently is 16-17% of our GDP and will rise to 20% by 2016.

But no. We shouldn’t have any (more) government involvement in the healthcare system. That would be socialist (whatever that means). Some people believe that the government is an inherently inefficient means to accomplish any goal whatsoever. Inefficient? 20% of our GDP in 2016?! I’m sorry, but the private sector sure isn’t getting it right.

    Dragunov

You don’t have healthcare – you have an industry.

    nyoki

    Well put.

    Kamakiri

I think the problem is that you have too much of Medicare, Medicaid, MCHO, CHIP, VA and so on. One or two should be suficient. And definitly no insurance premiums, it stops people without insurance from having proper health care, or so i understand.
At least you don’t appear to have a health care system debt. Owing money to pharmaceutical companies sucks.

    WistfulD

Well, having all that is a little inefficient (if nothing else because they each have to have office supplies with their own letterhead), but that’s how it works. Americans are very libertarian. We believe overall in the power of the success of the individual, and if you aren’t making your way in the world, it is because you weren’t smart enough or didn’t work hard enough. So we have a system where you get health care if you’ve earned it (although that has morphed into having gotten a job in a large enough corporation that it can leverage a reasonable deal with an insurer so that they and you together can pay a premium that you both will be okay with for a level of service that you’re okay with). If you aren’t making your way in the world, well too bad for you, no healthcare… except if your elderly (bad p.r.), or veterans (they risked their lives for the nation, but have no health coverage? congress won’t let that stand…during an election year), or amazingly poor (let’s toss a bone to the bleeding hearts, having people die in the streets is not something we want to see on the front page), etc. etc.

In case you didn’t want to read that wall of text, basically what we have is a system that takes care of employees of large corporations, and also anyone who fits into some demographic that a congressman can get a photo op signing a bill to give them benefits. But if you are an adult male (or a majority of women who aren’t pregnant or raising children, and even then…),under 65, who doesn’t work for a large corporation (self employed, small business owners and their staff, working two half-time jobs, etc. etc. the only option for you is to get a high-deductible, low payout insurance that costs a lot because you have no collective leverage, and doesn’t really help you unless you get really f***ed up and your healthcare costs go through the roof. Then it will keep you out of bankruptcy… maybe.

    WistfulD

Damn, even my synopsis are overly wordy! Sorry guys, I’m in a public health masters program. This is my bread and butter.

    IAMBATMAN

You forgot about the part where they pay people to get your coverage denied. I’ve heard of one person working for blue cross/shield who gets bonuses for each person he/she gets denied.

    nyoki

The previous CEO of Cigna Health has gone public w/ the ins and outs of how large health insurers make their profits; it’s not a pretty picture.

    nyoki

Maybe it wasn’t Cigna, can’t find the article I read, it was a few months ago.

If “gov’t hands” were off Medicare, Medicare wouldnt exist.
