Atheist who, unsolicited, goes around spouting off how superior their unproven belief is to any other unproven belief is as fucking annoying as any other religious numbnut who does the same.

Atheist in general don’t bother me, just like most religious people. It’s the ones that must shout in your face about how their belief is better than any other belief, those atheist are just as bad as those idiot fundermentalist christians and muslims who do the same. At least “fundermental” atheist haven’t yet decided to be suicide bombers to prove how better their belief is, but who knows, as atheism grows I’m sure there is going to be atheist zealots who might decide to do so.
Our faith should be expressed in working toward a better planet for our children and not the selfish, juvenile hope for a better afterlife for ourselves. I don’t think anyone is going to Hell because it only exists in the minds of people who wish ill-will on others.

Well, a lot of those people up there being quoted would look at you like you were crazy if you said that they were Atheist (which I guess shows that questioning of religion does not rest solely in the hands of atheists).
Well, Asimov, Dawkins and Adams are solidly in the agnostic atheist camp. Socrates is a maybe, Probably doubted the state gods, but much of his real views are lost to time and are confused with Plato’s character of Socrates. But one with to consider when talking about someone like Jefferson (or Washington, even) is that he lived before there were plausible, non-theistic theories about the origin of the universe and the origin of life. So from what we know about his beliefs, its reasonable to assume that if he had known about evolution, the big bang, etc., he would have been an atheist.

It all comes back to one thing for me, how many people have been killed in the name of atheism? I’m sure it’s a non-zero value but when compared to everything from murder sprees to wars I have a hard time seeing religion as a part of any successful future society.
