    These posters never motivate me because the benefits/savings never go where they claim it *could* go to. If my action could directly help power 280,000 homes,(or whatever the number was) i’d do it in a heartbeat and get my family to do it as well.

    Problem is, my reductions will just ending lining some dudes pocket, or being wasted elsewhere.

    So until then, get off my john, tree-huggers.

    Power 280,000 homes or have $0.33 worth of gold per phone isn’t that much. 32 gallons of gas per year? That’s laughably small. And my electricity all comes from hydro, so comparing it to gasoline is just silly.

    These posters annoy me, they just make me numb to the whole green cause. The other day some idiot was passing around an email at work, infomring us of the environmental impact of sending emails. It was really elaborate and I wish i had saved it (he was emailing it to the whole department, what a knob). Some people get really neurotic. I have a phone, i’m gonna use it and i’m going to email as much as I want.

    This kind of thinking always pisses me off, it’s always “it COULD happen!” or “IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF!!!!” It’s never just solid facts.

    Yeah, all of that stuff COULD happen, but I look at these things a lot like predicting the weather. Yeah, it MIGHT be sunny, but you know what, it could probably snow, too.

    I cannot seriously respect the kind of people that come up with this kind of “Think green!” and “omg think of the planet!” type of panic that they try to shove into our faces. I’m willing to bet whoever made this poster has a cell phone and that makes them a hypocrite.

    61% of the ENTIRE WORLD has a cell phone subscription??? Really???? Maybe 61% of the US or Japan… the entire world is probably closer to 1% or less. I guess this poster is a prime example of “Lies, damn lies, and statistics.” 😀

    61% of the entire world is probably about right. Cell phones are way popular in 3rd world countries. Even places like Somalia have high percentages of cell phone use.

    Yeah. It actually has been easier to set up cell towers in lots of southeast Asia than running land lines would have ever been.

    Cell technology is extremely easy to deploy and is well documented in the areas indicated. Food, water, and electricity all need a large amount of infrastructure built up, cell towers do not. They communicate to each other over long range wireless, and then to the phones the same way they do here. It is believable because it is a god damn fact.

    Oh you silly meaningless statistics lovers…

    Bears as much meaning in the real world as saying “if you laid all the *insert food here* that *company* makes in a year it would reach *the moon / the sun / china* and back again *giant number* times!”

    I think it’s funny that the Eco-movement is always aimed at consumers, when it’s the corporations that produce all this shit that we consume.

    the solution to our energy problem lies at the producer level and not the consumer level

    I was mostly with it until the last bit suggesting that i should charge my “cell” phone half as much. Given I only charge it when its flat or almost flat, I’d like to know what I’m supposed to do here.
