I think it was in Sledge’s With the Old Breed, but it was mentioned that a marine tried to cut a Japanese soldier in half across the waist with a BAR. Just to see if he could.

I think I read about that. PFC Eugene Sledge?

Yes. After he left the marines, he wrote With The Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. Its on page 143 in the copy that I have, its while they are at Peleliu. A marine with diarrhea is being chased by a Japanese soldier waving a bayonet. A BAR gunner sees the Japanese soldier, but waits to shoot at him until the enemy gets close enough, and then shoots him just to see if he could cut the guy in half with his BAR.

I read the Bill Sloan version. I also have his book over Okinawa.

Speaking of Eugene “Sledghammer” Sledge, his book is one of two that is being used as source material for HBO’s new series The Pacific. I cannot wait for this show, Tom Hanks says it is the spiritual sequel to Band of Brothers.
