I just looked this up on Google Earth – nowhere near this complete. Is the GE image old, or is this a mock-up? thanks.

Likely both.

Google Earth still shows my neighborhood as a patch of desert, and they started building houses here almost 4 years ago.

Not to get all tinfoiled, but dubai fucking terrifies me.
Seems like all of the money is going there from around the world to build a rich people’s private paradise in the relative middle of nowhere; and I reckon that when the nukes come down to wipe out the rest of the planet, those responsible will probably be holing up in there in their megalithic arcologies built on the sweat and blood of everyone else.

Not tinfoiled at all, but right on. This is a corrupt city with no future, as all the wealth as been built on an finite resource (oil) and essentially slave labor. Did you know that just a few generations ago, Detroit was the 5th richest city in the world? Dubai will become the next Detroit, times a hundred.
