Well that’s how countries are made when they are allowed to grow atleast somewhat naturally, instead of taking a ruler over Africa or the American continent and handing out territory

They couldn’t keep it straight until the father of all industrial-age nations came and Napoleon’d all over it
The whole thing was a horrible mess that made economic and cultural (and political and scientific (and therefore educational)) development completely impossible. The only ones got away lucky were the ones at the northern coast, all others were practically piss pots.
And, worst of all, that thing is the foundation of the small-mindedness of modern-day germans. (Along with their nowadays fucked up educational system and completely inane medial environment)

Just to get this right:
the map shows Germany between 1815 and 1866 aka Germany as given by the Congress of Vienna which restored Europe AFTER the first defeat of Napoleon
actually Otto von Bismarck got it mostly straight from 1848 as a politician until 1862 when got it even more straight as prime minister. He ended his career 1890, 19 years after he became chancellor of the empire. When he had it most straight the German emperor Wilhelm II. busted him and fucked it up with WWI. damnN00B
either way.
the federalism, especially with the eduaction system sucks most ass.
I’m from Berlin and my diploma is as worth as a flying cuntsuck in bavaria.

You guys have no fucking idea what you’re talking about. If you look at maps of Europe from the 15th, 16th, 17th, etc, centuries, it all looks like this. Spain, France, England, Italy, Netherlands, all looked like this too.

This, but it was a lot worse in the former Holy Roman Empire. It’s kind of cool to see Badem-Württemberg before it was one state in modern Germany. “Wir können alles außer Hochdeutsch.”

Now imagine each of those different states having their own currency. This is why the Zollverein was important.
