    Yuck.
    Mostly I say that because I ate a burger from Chicago Uno (of which I still have half in the fridge) and have been burping up ever since. Damn I feel like shit.

    Question: Why is Chicago Uno the only restaurant that will serve me a burger rare? What are the doing that the others aren’t? Should I be worried about the nasty ecol-i?

    the reason burgers arent served rare is because they are ground beef, so all the nastiness (i.e., ecoli) gets mixed around throughout the meat. with cut meat like steaks and stuff, the outside is definitely cooked to kill everything, but it isnt usually necessary to cook things well done. its just safe to bring it up to 165 or 170 to make sure everything is dead.

    this is my understanding, and it could very well be wrong 🙂

    compasseagle89: It sounds right for me, and I have education about food and cooking. So if you get a whole piece of meat in your burger, you’re safe. If not, well nice to know you 😛

    last time I checked E. Coli wasn’t deadly, it just makes you sick with the shits….go for the rare if it makes you happy, just know you’ll run a chance of being toilet bound for a few days!

    The pink stuff on the fries is thousand island dressing . The fries also have cheese and grilled onions. “Animal style” fries from in and out burger. They are actually amazing.

    DisplacedTexan: That’s what my son said. I’m still not clear why that should make it safer for me. Is there some way they make sure that the meat they use for burgers is E-coli free prior to grinding?
    SpanDee: E-coli could very well be deadly for me since I have a compromised immune system.

    so ground beef needs to be brought up to 160 in the center, medium is 145, and well done is 175. i guess i was thinking of the ground beef temps.

    compasseagle89: When they brought me my burger, I cut it in half (it was huge) and it was still a bit bloody in the middle, which is what I’d asked for. It was definitely cool to the touch. Well I didn’t get sick, so all is good.

    Mmmmm, In ‘n Out. I’d never get animal style fries, but god damn if I don’t get a 3×3 animal style with extra tomatos every time I go. Heart attack in a box? Hell yes, but you only live once…what good is it if you don’t occasionally flirt death when you eat something? (I’m looking at you, puffer fish; you’re going down!)

    E-coli can be transmitted via unclean hands (If I remember correctly, everybody has e-coli. You just don’t want someone else’s)just ask Food Maker (Jack in the Box)at least one child died from an e-coli burger.

    marcuserektus: Everyone has various e-coli in their digestive system. We’d die w/out them. The e-coli that makes us sick is a particular type that lives in a cow’s digestive system: E. coli 0157:H7, E. coli 0121 and E. coli 0104:H21.
    Its shown up in spinach because of the spinach growers vicinity to a cattle farm.
    I know why and how one gets e-coli poisoning. I’ve worked in my brothers’ restaurants. I had to take that food servers/cooks course, and could work as a cook in a hospital. What I don’t understand is how a restaurant that grinds its own beef makes it safe from e-coli.

    marcuserektus: I know they’re working on (or may already have) irradiating food that doesn’t get cooked (e.g. spinach. lettuce). I don’t think that would work w/ meat though.
