I lived in Wyoming for a year and a half, and everybody knows that Boulder is a liberal/new age/stoner haven and that CU is one of the top 10 party colleges in the United States.
You gotta love California… hm, I do wonder what they were protesting.

i want to know how it got translated into a day? it was a time of day that started it, not a month and day of the year…legalize it? that would just cause more problems..how so? well the already armed, and dangerous dealers wouldnt take too kindly to being put out of business…you think the government is going to continue to let them sell it, and just pay a tax on it? maybe, but are they willing to pay that tax? most likely not…
I have to say events like this are a really strong arguement agaisnt legalization. When mainstream America sees this, it conjures up the worst stereotypes of potheads. I am totally in favor of legalization, but this kinda stuff doesnt help achieve that goal (and i could care less about the pros and cons of legalization). Mainstream needs to feel confident that weed wont be totally ubitqious in public, wont be in their faces all the time. Smoke your weed and have fun, but do it in the privacy of your home.
@...Teutonic Logic: Yeah, non-public demonstration worked for the civil rights movement and women’s suffrage. These students will be a part of mainstream America in about five to six years. The power they will wield then starts to develop now. I could see legalization realistically happen within the decade.

Protesting is fine, but a mass smokeout? Potheads have to realize that there is a sizeable percentage of the population that despises weed, and potheads and this isnt the way to win them over. These are the folks that always bullied stoners in high school. They persist thru adulthood, while many stoners drop their smoking habit somewhere in the mid 20s.
And people have been saying for years that once this generation of potheads grows up then legalization will be acheived, and nothing has happened. I would love to see legalization, in fact I hope my next statement is totally wrong, but I dont think we will see legalization within the next two decades. Its just to politically toxic for any politician to touch. They risk opening themselves up to charges of soft on drugs soft on crime, it will cost tremendous amounts of political capital and for what? What will the politician or politicians get out of it?
Oh its pretty lame to compare the civil rights movement and the feminist movement to the legalization movement.

I have to agree with some of you that this is indeed not the way to go about legalization. Sadly it doesn’t make much of a difference because in the end they are all still “young, stupid students”. Whether you like to believe it or not the older you are the stronger your voice will be heard, i know sad but true. Just imagine if this was a crowd of middle aged to elderly people doing this it wouldn’t take but for a week later to hear that legalization has passed lol.

Well don’t regular cigarette smokers do this on a daily? And that shit is proven to kill and/or harm both the smoker and anyone near the smoke. Yet this is still legal. I guess it could be a counter argument to that statement.

@...hairy_testicles: I disagree with your argument regarding the criminal element. The criminals don’t get a choice if they are going to take kindly to it. Making it legal and regulating it puts people who are legitimate business people in control of the distribution, not the criminals. Making it legal actually takes their power to control people/markets for this substance away. At a bare minimum it makes it safer to have and obtain. Access becomes easy, and there is no ‘criminal profit’ to be made. Legalization and taxation would go a LONG way to digging this country out of its hole.

It’s the most fascist law in our country. More people die every year from aspirin related deaths. It’s a war on cognitive freedom. All arguments as to whether or not decriminalizing it are irrelevant. You cannot keep making innocent people criminals because you like the idea of keeping a nonsense ban in effect. Laws are always less than perfect solutions, and this is one that just creates problems for honest people.
